Both aren't exactly the "big daddy" chrono in their houses.. That honour would go to the Datograph and the 5070 respectively.. In fact the reason the subdials on the ALS aren't aligned is because the movement is garnered from the Datograph, where the big date pushes the subdials down..

Aesthetics wise, personally I prefer the ALS chrono. A very wearable size on my small wrist.

The look/feel of the ALS is the dog's... and wins for me...

Then go for the Dato, certainly would be my choice over these 2. I would also take it over the 5070p and will be hopefully.

Its tough decision. But I'll push myself for Patek.

interesting i just noticed the ALS does not have the Tachymeter scale at all.

im not saying ill ever use it, but it is a significant part of a chronographs appeal and functionality, i find its absence leaves me wanting.

Lets suppose im on the assembly line and i need to know how many teddy bears are being made per hour?
The ALS would do me no good...the Patek would come through in the clutch.

Ps i just had to double check, the datograph has the tach scale...whew!

I also recently noticed the DS has a raised/sloping tachy and I quickly checked back that the original Dato doesn't which is what I prefer.

1815 for me, but for weird reasons.
I don't like watches that are associated to doctors. No disrespect for doctors here !
Each time i see a 5170, I can not help but picture a man in a white blouse taking my pulse...
Not a nice thought for such timepiece IMO

interesting…
i picture daniel day lewis in the "unbearable lightness of being," when he breaks into a woman's apartment via the fire escape, she becomes startled and he says, relax, take off your clothes, im a doctor...

5170G for the sole reason that it will have better resale value. (Not a big fan of either piece)

Movement wise I like the Lange while appearance wise I like the Patek. Maybe one better solution is to get the datograph.

Between the 5170 and the 1815 it's a close call, which IMO doesn't bode well for the 5170 given its considerably higher price tag. When pitted against more equitable competition, (I.e. the Dato up/down), there's no competition, as the Dato wins hands down with its array of features.

Am I allowed to change my vote? I accidentally went up to the city today to try on some Lange's and compare to the 1921 VC I was considering.

During this time I developed a perhaps irrational need for an 1815 Chrono.

I love both pieces, it would be a tough choice but I prefer the look and styling of the 5170.

I've have been hunting for a classic 2 register chronograph for some time and while some of the Patek references are highly desirable, it is the ALS 1815 Chronograph (first version with the pulsation markers) that I fell in love with. It is perfect in every way to me and relatively well priced (secondary) vs. the comparable Pateks.

I recently was able to find one to my liking and should have it in my possession in a few days.

Wrist pics to follow!

Congrats, that ALS is quite fantastic.
I especially like that first version, I actually hadn't known about it until after I pulled the trigger on the 5170 ... may have affected my choice:)

Congrats! One of my favorites (though you can't go wrong with any Als or patek chrono IMO)

Not a super big fan of chronos, especially if they have only that, so if a Dato is possible that would definitely take it, but between the 2 if bought right then the 1815...
