What's up with all the new members making these posts about parents buying them high end watches? No offense, just curious.

I hope you truly appreciate the magnitude of this gift from your parents.
I would say YM blue dial, or Hulk. Very modern pieces. |

I'd freak out if my father bought me a rolex… heck I'd be happy if he wore pants when appropriate

Man, there are many choices in SS. Go to a good authorized dealer and try as much as you want. Try the new GMTIIC blue black, DJII smooth bezel, DSSD, green bezel submariner.
If non sing to you, then go for another brand. Omega, AP, IWC, JLC among few that come to mind. Good hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If I wasn't buying my own Rolex at 30 I'd wait until I could. 30 is an awkward milestone for this kind of gift. But I guess it's relative to financial position. I'd ALSO be happy if my dad wore pants at the appropriate times lol.

A silly post. Take a rain check. I do not believe a 30th b'day is a reason to get a Rolex......from your parents. I recommend waiting until you can afford one with your own cash or wait til your wife can afford one and surprises you on your 40th or 50th b'day.
If you insist on getting the Rolex today then consider the DJ 80315 over the SS Daytona. Let us know what you select in the end (golf clap).

I bought myself a 216570 for my 30th. If you come from a family where they are buying you 5k+ birthday presents for turning 30 then I suspect you probably have enough cash in your own account to just get what you want anyway. I kind of feel like this is a troll post but if not, I agree with the sentiment that getting a Rolex for the sake of getting a Rolex probably isn't the right move. Ask for something else or tell your parents I'd like a belated 30th gift. Any of the options you were considering are fine by me.

i'm only posting because I'm also turning 30 and not getting a watch. The next one's on my list are either a SS Daytona, Grand Seiko Spring Drive or a IWC Portuguese line, but that's just the opinion of a poor 29 year old.

Thanks guys for your replies! I appreciate your input, ALL of them, also the "you're ungrateful prick" ones because that I was expecting.
I've deep passion for watches, or for watchmaking, and since I was a kid I've loved Rolex-es. I love the company, what it has achieved, the history and their philosophy. I've always wanted a Rolex but now, when the time has come, I just can't choose. This is supposed to be the watch from my parents, which is a huge deal, so I want to get it right. It's more than a watch, it's their gift to me, they're making my dream finally coming true. But, like I said, there is nothing calling out to me which is damn annoying. I thought this would be easy, but no, it's hard because I've become way too critical. I want something perfect, but the perfect watch doesn't exist. So I'm in a dilemma, I want the watch and I don't want it. I'm not trying to sound ungrateful or disrespectful even though it sounds like it, because I don't want to get an expensive watch that I'm not gonna like and therefore not going to wear with pride. That would be extremely disrespectful to my parents who are very thoughtful and being very generous. I've to think this through very carefully. I'm also leaning more and more towards Zenith and this one I find absolutely beautiful: http://www.zenith-watches.com/en_en/...-vph-2082.html Any opinions on that one? A Daytona vs. El Primero? Thanks again! |

If you cannot pick the perfect Rolex (which doesn't exist anyway, as you said too) from the current lineup, then how about picking a great vintage one? Sub 5513, GMT 1675, etc, there are plenty of great watches from the past that have a great history. You can even pick a birth year Rolex to make it even more special. Hunting down a 1984 Rolex could be a challenge, but then again, it would make it a special acquisition.
As for Zenith, they make great time pieces and stunning movements. The El Primero is one of the most iconic chronographs of all time, and its movement used to drive the Daytona. Pretty much the perfect pedigree if you ask me And I understand and agree with your admiration about Rolex. But who said you won't be able to buy yourself your own Rolex when all things add up? Until then, you can venture to other brands, either via their current lineup or vintage time pieces. BTW, for such an occasion I have another vintage choice to recommend: get an original Speedmaster Moon Watch by Omega, driven by Cal.321. Pick one from 1964 or so, and have a watch 20 years older than you (that tip comes from me, a guy who owns a Moon Watch 10 years older than himself)

Hmmm, this will be tough! So what have you tried on, and what is your current GMT?

Besides Rolex, what other watch brands do you find interesting, exciting or admirable? Do you prefer GMT, diving or pilots watch styles? Do you find titanium watches, rubber straps or leather straps appealing? Have you tried on any Bremont or IWC watches for example?

Thanks Fiery for your interesting points earlier. I've taken them into consideration, it would for sure be interesting and a good compromise to go vintage or even to find a 1984 Rolex until I can afford the "perfect" watch for me. The Omega Speedmaster could also work, but only with the original Lemania 1873 movement.
In general I don't like so many brands out there. I'm becoming more familiar with the independents and liking them more and more them more I learn but unfortunately they concentrate on classic looks and sport models are not so common. In terms of the big brands I would say that I like Omega, Zenith, Tag Heuer and Rolex. I was recently introduced to Sinn and they look very cool, plus they are doing something inventive. A. Lange & Sohne is also quite something, and even though they look amazing, not really my style but I admire their craftmanship. Bracelets or straps don't really matter, can do both but I find straps usually more comfortable. GMT, pilot, chrono or dive, doesn't matter really as long as I find them appealing in looks. Haven't tried Bremont or IWC (IWC I don't really like but I find Bremont interesting brand). Thanks for your effort! |

Bitter people need to relax....
ALL OF YOU WHO FEEL THAT ROLEXES ( or any fine watch in general) SHOULD NOT BE A GIFT NEED TO GET A GRIP!
It is fairly common for parents to but their children a nice watch since it is one if the few things that a person wears daily and can withstand the test if time (no pun intended)!! You do not need to buy your own "nice" watch to appreciate it, nor should a person be looked down upon for not purchasing their own. So for all of you that have negative comments to say or are "jealous" get over it and just realize everyone's situation is different in here and the common bond is just am interest in watches. FYI.... My DAD gave me my first Rolex at 15 ( after I went through 2 TAG's) and my mother gave me a Breitling for college graduation. I have always appreciated watches since my days of wearing G-shocks and cherish the watches that were GIVEN to me more than any watch purchased myself! To the OP. Do not call yourself a spoiled brat just because your parents want to buy you a Rolex for you 30th birthday. Only call yourself one if your are not appreciative of the gift. So to all if you who think I or anyone else is less deserving or just plain spoiled.....

I'm not sure the perfect watch exists. Some people find one watch and they are good with it for 20 years. And then you have lots of people on this forum who have been searching for the perfect watch for 20+ years. I say think about what qualities are important to you in a watch, narrow down your choices to about 3-5, go to an AD and spend some time with each on your wrist. One of them will stand out. Let us know what you get. |
