I have engraved one for my son and will give it to him when he earns it (details TBD). I bought him a 14060M, which I love, and just put a very simple message in the case back. It's sitting in the bank safe waiting for him to be ready.

I had my polar Explorer II engraved on the case back, in an Old English font. It reads "Solve et Coagula"...

I've never had the desire to engrave anything, let alone my watch, but I'm the sort of person that likes things as close to original condition as possible.
I can understand the appeal and it's significance for others though. Each to their own. |

[QUOTE=directioneng;4685701]Buy a replacement case back have it engraved and put the original back in the box is you have this concern. If you are going to keep an engraved Rolex for 40 years I doubt if you would care for a loss in value.[
Rolex have an exchange policy. You won't get the old one back from them if you ask for it to be replaced. His signature indicates a new model and I presume it is this sub he is talking about. I have not seen any 116610 case back for sale used, still too new. Secondly, we all know plenty of people upset they messed with their vintage subs, altering things with service parts, things happen in life and you may need to sell that's all I am saying. Just my opinion of course. IMHO.

These weren't originally mine, but I like the history that comes with them.

A friend of mine had a sold gold Cartier Santos
given to him in the 80's by Sir Elton John. He had the back engraved with a nice friendly inscription. It read: "Put it back, you thieving toe-rag!" Needless to say, we thought it humorous at the time. |

An engraved gold watch for 25 years of service......sadly a thing of the past. Just remaining with one company for that long is now nearly impossible.

I engraved my GMT in 1971 while serving in Viet Nam with rank, name, and year. I didn't know any better at the time and didn't consider the watch as a collector's item in the future, but in retrospect I'm okay with it because I will never sell the watch. This was my first Rolex and although watches will come and go this one will stay. I would not engrave another watch unless it was part of a special event and having the assurance that I would never sell it, but that contingency has a very low probability for me now.

Agreed. If you plan never to sell it then engrave away! If you are, or become, very famous then that will only make the watch more valuable (see you on Pawn Stars!).

It's a great idea...my wife had my Sub engraved prior to giving it to me as a gift.
It reads: "You are my dream come true. It's you for me & me for you." http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=184550 |

Great thread... My SS daytona was a wedding gift from my wife. I have full intention on passing it down to our daughter who is one now. I been contemplating about engraving something on it before i pass it down.

It's weathered quite a bit over the years but is still visible. The photo enhances the engraving somewhat.

engraving
When my dad bought his day/date back in 1986, He decided to personalize it by lightly engraving his name and d.o.b. on the back. I'm sure that he never thought that it's value would be questioned, as he intended to keep it forever. After he passed, I wore it for several years, but when I decided to sell it, most potential buyers turned their noses up at it when they saw the engraving. I eventually found a buyer that paid a fair price. I wonder if the engraving was polished off...it was so light. The point is that it sold, but only after considerable work!

I engraved my 114060 to commemorate the birth of my first child on 1/8/14. I plan to give the watch to him when he is mature enough to respect it and care for it on his own.
