I think that this video could offer some interesting perspective.

I'll watch this guy's videos sometimes mainly for the entertainment value, sort of in the same way that its hard to look away from a train wreck. Basically he has a bunch of high end watches (some of the brands discussed in this thread) that have reliability issues and are difficult/expensive to service because parts and watchmakers who know how to work on them are hard to find. My favorite quote is, "I was a Rolex guy for so long that I took it for granted that watches actually worked."

Warning: this video contains a lot of explicit language.

I'm in the south bay .... Everybody has a rolex...mostly datejust's and GMT's...I guess it's what you wear when you go out. I've talked to customers about watches, but the only other brand I've heard is Panerai. The other brands I notice at malls are Casio G-Shocks and a lot of women wear Cartier.
I've never seen an AP or Patek.

interesting note that our trf trusted seller 'kringkily' mentioned to me that on the west coast all the 20-30 somethings don't have watches (use phones) but all the guys in manhattan have 'watches' thats because the watch says something....and to prove my point, you will never see a watch that doesn't have the brand name on it....imagine.....its because the brand 'says something'.....and i will add, not having a watch says something also.....sidebar: the most influential man in my life was my stepfather (psychiatrist pathologist iq 172 crazy smart and crazy)....who told this 18 surf rat (me) that i was to always have a watch, a pen, and a notepad so i could be responsible for being on time, dependability and communicating....i took it seriously....worked for me....so the watch means something to me and it being a rolex means something to me....

rolex was the badge of honour and the mark of success of men where i grew up in newport beach california in the 60/70's....not a sign of arrogance, no, contractors that built great houses had them, good physicians had them, guys who could do stuff, build stuff, sell something etc i.e. help people had them....rolex was kinda the medal of honour of the 'get er done' crowd....the skinny tie/suit/smoke and mirror/lawyer crowd had the watches named after some french or italian guy....like they say in the boating world 'its an honest boat' meaning you get what you see....no surprises.....rolex is an 'honest' watch...and i also think omega.....but panerai (imho) looks cool, but if you want me to think its an 'honest' watch, don't try to inspire me by telling me its origins come from the italian navy....the italian navy with 2 guys riding a sub sled do not inspire confidence.....have a 3 day equestrian competition named after you, ok (the rolex) or time a swim meet or go to the moon....that, to me inspires some confidence.....

let the flaming begin...

One of my WIS pal once told me, I don't fully agreed with him but I find HIS experience very interesting and humorous... He said, Rolex is the wife so robust and never fail, PP the beloved mistress, delicate and sweet, while the rest.... You can imagine... LOL....

That is what made me worried. The transition from wristwatches to smartphones and eventually to smartwatches

Rolex has always been my first love, but I needed to "go away from Rolex" for me to make that realization. I came back full circle.

Since my father exposed me to the brand at a young age, I always dreamed of Rolex. Then I discovered Omega and jumped on the Omega Fan Boy "Rolex is overpriced and Omega is superior brand wagon." Subsequently, I went on a year long watch odyssey exploring the far reaches of horology. Any style, brand, price point, and purpose you can think of, I explored. Well, here I am a year later. I have an Omega Seamaster Ceramic and I know my next watch will be a Rolex. (If I can ever break into the job market!) The only brands I consider worth owning for my future purchases are Rolex, Jaeger Lecoultre, and Omega (only the classic Speedmaster Professional).

Hell, my long standing mantra of "I'll never buy a Submariner because it is so common" is under heavy assault (think final days of Stalingrad). I guess I'm just at the point now where I want to wear what I want. Not because a piece is historically significant or a brand will retain its value. I'm going to wear what appeals to ME. Unfortunately, the entire Rolex line up appeal to me.

I personally can't stand AP, Breitling, or Hublot. I think I prefer less radical designs and more classical approaches to horology.

Worse yet many cannot even tell the time from an analog watch. Seriously. I've had to show them how and they all said it was too much hassle.

A rolex was a watch that I knew I wanted from the day I first started wearing a watch. I was 23 when I bought my first rolex. Almost four years later I have no desire for anything other than a Rolex. I am proud to wear my watch everyday that I put it on. I expect as I get older my tastes will change, but it will be towards another rolex. Probably two-tone submariner :)

Not really. In our watch group in Jakarta, we have lots of 20s to early 30s guys owning multiple Rolex although most own AP and PAM as well.

I'm in my early 30's and the Submariner seems to be the watch of choice for my demographic.

I think Rolex could attract more / younger buyers if they offered a variety of sizes to cater for different tastes. Eg a Sub in 40 / 42 / 44mm for example. The trend (if you can call it that) for larger sizes would be catered for, and the classic guys who think their arm will fall off if you go 1mm over 40mm would also be happy

mid thirties here- one friend has cartier, another a vintage longines. the rest don't have watches or if they do, it's an after thought. I'm the only rolex owner in my circle.

Went through the Tag, Omega, Breitling phase... Then the panerai phase... But always had Rolex and now only Rolex. Everything else is a memory.

No contest. For me, it's only Rolex.

And maybe Patek.

I am 34 and mainly see Rolex or Omega with the occasional Breitling. Having owned all 3 it is Rolex only for me from here on out.

My first watch as a Seiko auto my mother gave me when I was 10 y/o. My dad owned a manual steel Rolex. Owned dozens of Seiko, Citizen, Casio, and any number of other "mall" brands. When I decided to own a watch for keeps I bought a tt Thunderbird in 1990. As I also fancy other designs and brand I bought IWC, Zenith, Panerai, Breitling, Omega, Tag and B&M. My work week rotation consists of six Rolex watches and occasionally I'd wear one of the other brands for a particular purpose.

Have two sons (23, 33 y/o) and gave each of them a Rolex. I observed that when not wearing a watch they do use their cell to check time. When wearing a watch they look at their wrist for the time. The younger son (nurse) wears a watch every day, the older son not so much (drummer, pro dancer, choreographer) unless he's dressed up for a date or for a formal performance. I'm betting my younger son will be the collector of the two as he already has two dozen watches and a Rolex.
