Try them all on and buy the one that sings to you. If it's the DJ....great choice. The DJ is a Rolex icon and will indeed look good with all manner of dress and works for any occasion. Getcha one!!

Icon6 The DJ or DJ2 is a good choice

The DJ (tt Thunderbird) was also my first auto Rolex. Still have it after 24 years. However, I recommend you look at the other models, try them on and one (or two) will sing to you.

Don't overthink it. Listen to your feelings. If it feels right to you, it is. Your style is your own, so wear what you want and relax.

I'm in IT as well. I wear my DJs with suits, khakis, and jeans.

Good luck.

Over thinking anything is a problem. Go to a few local AD's, try all the watches they have that you like, ask for a quote, get the model number and start looking on TRF for sale posts, be patient and the right watch will find you OR just buy the one you like form an AD. Either way PULL THE TRIGGER. You will be happy you did!

I've been viewing this board for quite some time now, just created an account recently as I've decided I'm going to purchase my first Rolex! First, I'd like to say congratulations on all of your collections, they are quite nice and show a wide variety of tastes globally.

I walked into my AD today, with the Explorer II in mind for my first purchase. I think it's an extremely versatile watch, and love the fact that you very rarely see one in the wild. Unfortunately, once I put it on... all of the lust that I've felt for that beauty went away. It just didn't look right while sitting on my wrist, oh well - on to the next.

The next watch the AD pulled out was a Submariner, lovely timepiece - but not for me (although it looked better on the wrist). I'm trying to go against the grain here.

Finally, the AD pulled out the Datejust in white, blue, and black. I put it on, and found it absolutely perfect looking in blue and black.

My question is, to all of you horological savants is: how versatile is this watch? Would it look normal with jeans, t-shirt etc.?

I started to get cold feet once the AD started talking about people in client facing roles (I work in technology, and sit behind a computer for 10 hours a day). It also isn't as sporty as the Explorer II, Sub and the others.

Maybe I just have cold feet, maybe I'm just confused, probably both - I'd appreciate any input you can provide, thanks in advance!

get a DJII with fluted bezel or a GMTII-C both are very versatile and can be dressed up or down.......

DJ is very versatile, as everyone has already attested to. Failing that, try the Milgauss or the Explorer 1.

a Datejust, like any oyster model, is a sport watch. Of course they are not considered 'professional' but that is beside the point.
You can swim, play outdoor, jog, go hiking, mountaineering, biking and so much more with the watch on your wrist. It is build and engineered to be able to do so.

But the beauty of the Datejust is it can also work as a dress watch. If you choose the fluted bezel version, on a leather strap for the ultimate 'dress', you have a nice versatile watch. Of course the fluted bezel always comes in gold so that takes a somewhat different approach to outdoor activities as it is a much softer material than the domed SS bezel.

I am fortunate to have a nice collection of Rolex models, both the oyster sport line (DJ, DD) and oyster professional line (SUB, GMT). If I was allowed to keep only one it would be a 36mm Rolex. I am no diver, no pilot and those Pro watches are nice to have in a collection but in the end they do nothing more than a DJ.

Here is one of my all time favorite watches :

DJII with a smooth bezel might be a bit more versatile than the fluted variety. Agree you should check out the Milgauss too. Have you looked at the Tudor Black Bay?

I don't think anyone ever regretted wearing a Datejust under any circumstance. It goes with everything and is a great way to make a statement while wearing casual clothes. This one works for me 24 / 7 if I need it to.

+1 for giving the Milgauss a chance. Try on as many Rolex watches as you can, and you'll see which one sings to you, which one looks stunning on your wrist, which one melts your heart. Get the one you find best, you really can't go wrong with any Rolex reference. All Rolex Oyster models are basically sports watches, with more sporty for some (Sub, SD, GMT, Daytona, Explorer, YM), and a little bit sports-elegant for others (DJ, DD, Milgauss, Sky-Dweller).

Keep in mind that most of these Romans dials have little or no lume. They're not very handy in the dark. That could come as a rude awakening if you weren't expecting it.

Welcome to the forum! Maybe go a bit retro and try on the 16610 or GMT?

Whichever one you get it won't be your last if you stay on this forum - I'm 6 years and probably 15 watches down the road from where you are now!
