Neither... I'd rather have the Seiko SBGE005 model.

Interesting. What do you think GS is worth?

Actually, I think Grand Seiko is one of the best values out there. What other company is as vertically integrated as Seiko? Rolex is the only other company that comes to mind. Seiko designs and manufactures everything down to the smallest components. To me, that is much more impressive than many of the Swiss companies that use ETA movements and generic designs. I think that a $6000 GS is a much better value than a $3000 Tudor.

Isn't personal taste a funny thing?

The lack of a cyclops is the first thing I didn't like about the Seiko.

Oh well...

I understand what you said perfectly, Wes. This is one of those things we go with our heart not our brain. If I could buy my watches with great in house movements that any watchmaker can work on, movements that keep excelent time +10/15 secs a day, great looking watches with awesome vintage charm and each one for 200/300 bucks, its hard to justify 6k for almost the same watch just with less charm and good looks (of course with many inovations but I respectfully could not care less for them). But that is just me and my humble point of view.

I have both a GS GMT and the Rolex Exp II 16570. They are both great watches. The GS is designed to play with light reflections while the Rolex is a designed tool watch. That said my GS sport watch is 200m water resistant and is more substantial weight wise than my 16570. They are totally different watches even though design wise seem somewhat similar. If you forced me to pick one I would take the GS.

It's a matter of taste.

The Explorer II is more sporty, while the SBGM025 GMT is a bit more dressy.

Also, one is discontinued, while the other is still in the catalog.

I prefer the EX2....but there was an older GS GMT w/ an orange hand that was, IMHO, the upscale Japanese cousin to the EX2 1655.

I really like the explorer much better. The numerals on the bezel are nicer and the face looks cleaner.

If going Omega, I would lean hard toward this...below. Steals my breath away every time I look at it. Plus I have a deep rooted love for all things GMT. The only thing that has kept me from buying it is that it is 43mm. A tad too big for me. If only they offered it in a 40mm.....

I think the price is approx 8k USD

I was actually thinking about this exact comparison. I don't think there exists a purely mechanical GS "tool watch" (yes, there is a Spring Drive or two). In fact, this GMT might be as close as GS gets to that mechanical tool watch sphere...again with the exception of the spring drives. I personally think about a Tudor Pelagos having a street price of about $4000 (and I LOVE that watch) then in my mind I imagine what a $4000-$5000 Mechanical GS diver might look like. Decorate the movement on an MM300 or SAGQ007, flash it up a bit, reduce the size a tad, and work some magic on the dial and hands....and I think such a GS would probably get my money. A bit surprised they have not done this on a large scale.

Street price is around 6K and I like that watch...but will never understand why they didn't just put the GMT numbers on the outermost portion of the dial! Do we really need 5,10,15,20 etc. there?

Well it's been a while since we had a GS vs Rolex thread

I'm a big fan of GS, but that particular GMT isn't my favourite. I'm partial to the SBGE001, amongst others...

I understand what you're saying. It seems like you really like Seiko, but its hard to justify paying 20x more for a Grand Seiko, right? Actually, when I think of it like that, 20x more is a big difference.

It is true that Grand Seiko is part of Seiko, but the similarities end there. On a technical level, Grand Seiko is leaps and bounds ahead of Seiko. Their watches are build using better movements, better materials, built by hand vs machine, etc... Everything is done to a much higher standard. Additionally, I really do think that Grand Seiko is greater than the sum of its parts. It's funny that you say that this is a case where we go with our heart more than our brain. I couldn't agree more. I guess our hearts just say different things.

GS makes GMT watches that are purely mechanical. There are standard as well as hi-beat versions.

Given these choices, the Rolex. However, I'd take a hi-beat GS GMT over the Exp II any day.

You nailed it buddy. Unfortunately my budget for watches is really narrow and I would like to have another Sub or two so for now GS is not on the radar, but Im glad and respect that you like it a lot.
