My usual philosophy is if you have doubts about affording a watch then give it more time.

The actual cost of a watch is what you pay when you bought it less what you can sell it for further down the road. AP holds value relatively well compare to other brands ( but not as good as Rolex and PP ) so maybe 30-40% depreciation to be on the safe side. If writing off this value is OK for you, then you can go ahead. That's how I see it anyway. And the basic needs and long term funds should be taken care of first before any luxury purchase. But if you feel bad about spending especially with family commitment, perhaps you should wait and reconsider it again at a later stage. There are many things in life that should take priority over watches. |

A little trick I have to help me feel better about spending alot on a watch is to really start planning on buying a more expensive one than I first thought, then after a while I switch my focus back to the one I was initially interested in and if I still desire that watch then I feel better for saving a fair bit of cash.
This is all with disposable play money only, terms and conditions apply etc... And a promise to a wife is not a TRF promise. |

So w 200 months of expenses in the bank, seems like a green light.
Depends on how you generate money. If you think your income will be continuous. I would not even think about it if I was confident in my abilities to replenish the ca$h |

Now this would send me broke!!!!
Do they even make watches that expensive. Even if say I had a 2000 dollar difference between fixed expenses. That would mean a $314,000 watch. Although I could show this to my partner and say that I am very conservative with my money ;) Perhaps I should be another watch and not be so frugal |

not buying a watch for 10 years is difficult for me...why don't buy her a nice watch, then you can negotiate down to 5 years? Next, you can buy your own watch without feeling guilty.

that formula is interesting but I don't really understand how age factors into it at all
watches (and most other toys) should be purchased with a % of your disposable income / savings 10%? 20%? depends on your priorities :) |
