now thats interesting.....given the price of a speedy is much less than the daytona....
but would you rather have a daytona or a planet ocean chrono? |

I have not owned either to date, but the Speedmaster 3570.50 is at the top of my shopping list, whereas I have no immediate plans to own a Daytona, though I'm sure I'll own one, one of these days.
I love the heritage of the Speedy. And as others have mentioned, for $3k, it's one of the best value sport watches that there is. If you're a collector, you pretty much have to own one of these at some point.. don't you? |

If we're talking strictly about SS models, I'd choose a Speedy 9300 over a Daytona any day of the week.
It's not fair to compare the 3570.50 to a Daytona since the Daytona over 2x the price. |

I am fortunate enough to own both. Both are icons, but Daytona has moved upmarket. I find the speedy much easier to read and a very versatile watch, you can wear it on bracelet, leather strap or nato strap. The Daytona, although great on leather or rubber, is really a bracelet watch. I enjoy winding my speedy every day when I wear it, but I'm also glad the Daytona is automatic. Both are great and hope you get to own both, so my answer it get both and it doesn't matter which one you start with. Good luck in your choice.

If you intend to use the chrono function,
If you would like to be able to read the time & sub-dials, Imho, there is only 1 option. And that will also give you a historic & sexy hand wound chrono movement.

The fact that results are only 2:1 on a Rolex forum...really says a great deal.

I have both...my Dad's Speedmaster Professional, purchased in the mid '70s, and my own Daytona.
Both are great watches: Both are classic, bench mark designs. Both are versatile "wear anywhere you like, with anything, for anything" watches. Both have a great history. The Omega, of course, has the "Moonwatch" distinction...a unique honor. I think it trumps the Daytona, history wise. The Speedmaster is a really, really great value. It's also a much more practical and useful chronograph. It's simply more legible. So, if the value is important, if the history is important, and if you anticipate really needing to the chronograph, choose the Speedmaster. The Daytona is a stunning beauty, I think. I prefer it in all stainless steel trim. It has a dressier look than the Omega, so, if a dressy looking sports watch is what you're after, choose the Daytona. Lastly, consider the movements-- The Daytona is, of course, automatic, while the Speedmaster is a manual. So, that could be a tie breaker, based on which type you prefer or would really find most practical on a day to day basis. Now that we've got the side by side analysis completed...choose the watch that, emotionally, brings the wider smile to your face. At bottom, a watch purchase is more emotional than logical. So, I always recommend that people listen to their emotional response to the watch and, whenever possible, choose accordingly. |

I'm surprised it's not more lopsided seeing we're on TRF.
Never owned a Daytona, but I loved the Speedy when I had it. Domed crystal is just gorgeous. I look forward to owning one again. |

both are icons, with speedy having the edge in versatility and daytona having the edge in dress. ideally, both, and, if just one, then, that would necessarily be because of budget, so, speedy.

I prefer Speedmasters, but if you're giving them away, I'll take the Daytona, sell it, buy myself a Speedy and pocket the difference.

This is going to sound extremely reductionist and I mean no offense to Daytona fans.
One of these watches has its history tied to a city famous for automobile racing. The other is famous for going to the moon. Given the choice, I would go to the moon. Plus, I think the current Moonwatch looks better than the current steel Daytona. Not in terms of fit and finish necessarily, just in terms of aesthetics. |

Daytona, every single time. The Speedmaster just doesn't have the same quality of construction nor, in my opinion, is it such a thing of beauty in its design. Don't get me wrong, I like the Speedmaster, but I love the Daytona.
As for the whole moon watch thing, its significance is (I think) overstated. Is anyone really suggesting that the Daytona could not have gone to the moon and survived? It's well documented that GMT Masters did. Chronograph watches really grew out of motor racing. I'll take the one with the greater motor racing history. Even on heritage, therefore, the Daytona wins. |
