Forever is a long time and there is no guarantee that anyone will like a watch in the future.
I would go for a Sub from your list. If you like it, then you own a classic watch icon.

I have the LVc and Explorer II polar, and honestly I'm considering moving to a 116610LN and pocketing the change. There is no more comfortable watch for me than the SubC but the green doesn't go with everything. The SubC demands wrist time and so that's why I'm considering the swap, even though everyone has a black sub (and I hate that). If I'm honest, most of my enjoyment from the green sub comes from having something I don't see around every day.

The SD will likely be a permanent fixture in my collection. It's the best everyday wearer for me.

I'd take something with lug holes. But from your list the BLNR, and only because you don't have the 116710 with black bezel.

16600 Sea Dweller. A modern classic that still has soul.

Thanks for all the replies guys. It's no easy task choosing without being able to compare them in person. Most of these models are 1-6 month waiting lists at Australian AD's so may need to go overseas. I'm off to try sleep now with this on my mind....wish me luck

I like what Padi said, to go & try on as many as possible. For me the Sea Dweller is too big, & though they're iconic, I've never been personally smitten by the Sub. Personally, on that list, I'd go for the GMT. It depends on what you want out of a watch & what you do. There are a lot of options & going to an AD numerous time in different moods may help you decide. It doesn't really matter what you choose to hand down to a child... whatever's closely associated with Dad is what really matters.

I say BLNR. My opinions in red:
1. New Sea-Dweller 4000 Too big for all day, everyday wear 2. Submariner LV (Green) Ceramic I view this as an occasional watch. Most people don't wear much that goes with green 3. Submariner LN (Black) Ceramic Now this is a winner, but very common. Do you enjoy maritime sports? Then this is neutral, goes with everything...the one for you. 4. GMT II BLNR This is the one, especially if you travel or work with those in different time zones. Can be used as a dive watch, a timer, plus multiple time zones. A sub can't do all this. Not too common. Just the right splash of color without going overboard. Not too huge, but big enough. Goes with everything most people wear. Will look cool in 50 years. |

The BLNR is by far the most functional with both GMT and moveable bezel timer and as waterproof as most will need. But if looks is more important than that is a personal call.

Sub all the way. Awesome watch. The Sub might not stand out as unique but it certainly is a classic. You mentioned you wanted this to be an heirloom piece, I would stay clear of the coloured dials/bezels and stick to black.
The flipside, is to consider an all rounder, Datejust or DJ II. ;-) I have a DJ and a Sub...best combination in my eyes. :-D I chose 1st with what I was passionate about and 2nd that these watches will be heirloom pieces. ;-) All the best! |

Something I've learnt after a few years of watch collecting is that you can never go wrong with an iconic watch. Rolex seems to have a few iconic watches to choose from, so you're in luck.
From your list, I would go for the LN Sub. Guaranteed you will not get tired with that one. The new SD is great, but not as iconic as the sub and will you use it's features for the added $$$. The GMT II is amazing, but it needs to be Pepsi or Coke for it to be iconic. You should add to your list a Daytona. Another amazing iconic Rolex. Good luck in your choices. |

My vote is for the the Submariner No Date. This piece is a collection foundation. I regret not buying this first. It will be the next one I acquire.

From your list, personally, I'd go with the GMT. I don't dive and probably never will but I'd like to frequently travel when I get older and I still keep close contact with family living in different parts of the globe so it seems the GMT would be more useful to me. The general style of all 4 choices are pretty much the same anyway with a few small variations.

SD-C: thinner+tapered lugs and no cyclops compared to the Sub. Matte dial is also gorgeous!

It would have to be a sub-c. Color is on personal preference. Although I love the LV, as a first Rolex? I'm not so sure. I'd probably go with the LN. But really, you can't go wrong with either.

They are all nice watches, although I have a weakness for GMTs. Perhaps also consider a 216570 Explorer II ?
