I fly over 100 flights a year....I have never had a Rolex set off the metal detector....or for that matter my 2 oz Platnium ring either....but for some reason cheaper watches will set off the metal detector....Guess i'm stuck wearing fine time pieces....

Try putting the hand w/your watch either behind you or in front of you when going threw the detector (just rest it against the center of your back). If your arms are at your side being closer to the detector it's more likely to go off. Hope this makes sense. I have the joy of dealing w/security 3 to 4 times a week & have to do this w/a bracelet I have. Works like a charm. As far as theft do be careful because TSA is not liable for anything stolen & not too helpful if anything gets taken. I know of someone that had a SD snagged at DFW .

I had the same problem for yrs. I get on a plane at least twice a week. I always found that I could wear either my watch or my belt...not both. It was much easier to remove my watch, place it securely in a pocket in my briefcase before I got to the gate. About 6-8 months ago, I decided to just change belts to one with a smaller buckle. Less metal to set off the detector. Nowadays I wear both my watch and my belt. And I still take at least 2 flights a week. Now if I could just get the TSA to change the policy on taking off the d@mn shoes...though I've grown very fond of Ecco dress loafers :) |

I fly often throughout the US. Two weeks a month for the last 10 years. I have never been asked to take off my sub and it has never set off the detector.
When flying back from the Bahamas, I guess he was a customs agent, asked me if I had just purchased the watch. I advised him that it was over a dozen years old and pointed out a large scratch. That scratch should be gone as I expect my watch back anyday from RSC RSC +30 Fordex |

I flew alot last year with my GMT-II through CONUS. I never once took it off, and didn't have a problem at any airport that I visited. I flew mostly Southwest so I wasn't in any real major airports, so maybe that had something to do with it.
One time, though, I set off the metal detector at an airport. I then realized I had forgotten to take my wallet out, which had quite a bit of metal in it. So I take out my wallet, and the TSA agent points out my watch. I said, "that won't set it off, it was most certainly my wallet". She was very skeptical and told me that I was setting it off pretty bad from both sides, and that if I set it off his time I would have to be searched. Lo and behold, it was fine. I think it may be possible that the way the detector works is that it senses the amount of metal on your total body. So if you have a watch and other stuff, and set it off, removing just the watch will make it appear that it was just the watch when in reality removing any item would have dropped you below the threshold. Make sense? |

As I say, its not so much a question if the Rolex will set off the detector, at Attaturk International in Istanbul, they directed me to remove it--twice--when going through the security points.
No where else did I have to remove it though. C |

My 116520 and 16610 do not set off the detector, I know for a fact...
Just wear it I getting a Milgauss soon, but I am guessing the internal soft iron Faraday box would most likely set off the detectors, but no first hand knowledge. Has your Milgauss set off a detector??? |

I never take my Rolex or jewelry off. It never sets the detector off. If they insist I just tell them to use the wand.

Thanks to everyone who said the Rolex won't set off the detector (I have a SS/platinum YM). I don't want to risk it, though, so I discreetly take it off and put inside of a zippered compartment of my purse. I don't go through the scanner until just as my purse goes through the X-ray, and then I quickly grab my purse from the other side of the X-ray machine. A screener would have to unzip my purse, and then unzip an inner compartment to get at it. There just wouldn't be time to do it.
I would never think of just putting the watch in the bin, loose in my shoes, etc. I figure that if I go through the detector with the watch, and the detector beeps, the TSA screener will presume it's my watch, and ask me to take it off. By that point, my Rolex will be noticed, and it'll be obvious where I put the watch. |
