Anyone that buys a Rolex or anything else to impress someone (other than themselves) is pretty pathetic.

It dosent matter a jot why people buy a certain brand, all that matters is that they gain some enjoyment from it, it may be that I think someone is stupid for wearing a certain brand in a certain way, but they may think it quite correct, who am I to declare myself correct? What happens next? a Rolex hierachy? where people are graded on what other brands they wear and how their watch is adjusted.

Live and let live, it is much nicer.

I bought and wear a Rolex, not because is perceived as some sort of status icon, but because of quality. My desire to own a Rolex goes back to when I was only a teen who loved my Timex, Westclox and Elgin wrist watches and two inherited gold Elgin pocket watches given to me by my Grandfathers. Simply, I admired watches and pardon the pun, "what made them tick". Even in my teens I discovered, admired and desired to own a Rolex. Happily, many years later I made my dream come true and purchased one. I have never had an ounce of buyers remorse as I sometimes do with other purchases. I still have most of the watches I spoke about in my vault, some need servicing, others are still running strong. I love them all.

About your topic now:
Nick, marketing is everywhere!
Rolex IS a status brand as well (among upper middle class mostly; not the really rich though).
You can't avoid the "status effect" = the richer people making a "statement" to those below them.
Also the "bandwagon effect" = I am wearing Rolex cause my peers (same as I) do.
The "Snob" effect is when you are wearing smth rare. I wouldn't say this for Rolex anymore.

Cheers
What is middle class and how would you define class anyway?

After reading all of the posts in this thread, I have come to the conclusion that we're getting off track here. Stupid people are stupid people, not because of their choice in watches.
Whoever posted about getting together with people and their ltd ed. watches and not being able to connect with them; it's not because of those watches. They're just stupid people and it's hard to connect with stupid people.
Golden Bear makes a great point; if you buy something to impress anyone other than yourself, you're stupid. Why? Because if that's your plan, you're going to find out that people will still think you're a jerk because you're a snob, or just plain stupid. If you like someone just because of the watch they wear, you have bigger problems than I want to go into here.

Pete, I specifically said that anyone else would have ooh'd and ahh'd over those Ltd Edition watches, and they are not stupid people, just stupid when it comes to watches... therefore I defend my original premise that I'm a snob when it comes to watches...

Lee,
I'm sorry if you feel that I misquoted you. In fact, I was trying to keep from actually quoting you so that I could make a point without trying to use you specifically as an argument. As far as being a snob goes, I've got no problem with snobs when it comes to watches. But it still has to be for your own enjoyment, not so that others will ooh and ahh over them. I'm sure that your watches are for your enjoyment, not to impress others.
Anyway, I apologize if I made my argument look like I was using you to make it. That was not my intention.

Best Wishes,
Pete

Sure, hundreds of thousands of people wear Rolex because they are brand conscious snobs. Do you think they are all watch crazies like us?

There will always be a snobbery attached to any high end product.
They will always attract the people who must have the latest/coolest brand.
Will these people still wear it in 20 years time?
Did they buy it for its craftmanship?
Do they appreciate the build quality and heritage?

"Rolex: Label for Snobs?"

Substitute 'Rolex' for a true high-end watch brand and maybe it would make sense to me.

Brands are all around us...it's part of every day life.

I buy a lot of brand name stuff mainly for the quality and appearance of the product. However, I don't consider myself a snob because I don't look down on people if they don't purchase the same brands that I do.

And I will admit that one of the reasons why I bought a Rolex is name recognition. I see nothing wrong with that as long as I appreciate the other factors such as engineering and quality.

Seriously, how many of us Rolex owners do not own some name brand item?

As it is known the most famous brand in the world is Coca-Cola and the only watch brand which belongs to Top-100 of the world’s brands is Rolex. but that doesnt mean rolex is the most exclusive or expensive watch brand... as a matter of fact, the rich and famous rarely wear the Rolex... imho, Rolex caters more to the mass market, like Coca-cola caters to anyone and everyone. if you are talking about exclusive and expensive watch, look elsewhere

Why People Hate Rolexes

OK.

Rolex is a brand. Some people buy brands because they like the kudos of the label rather than the quality of the engineering or the classic design.

I love Rolex, but I admit it does disappoint me when I see a Rolex worn as a brand, rather than as a classic, quality timepiece.

Anyone else?

in my personal opinion i think rolex is a class for the masses and lesser mortals like me :(
the snobs and style icons prefer patek ...... lange and frank muller when it comes to it's diffrent and what have you
in any case it's always neighbour's envy and owner's pride!

Wearing a Rolex is a reflection of the owner.

It could be because of the name...

But it could also be a reflection of a buyer who wants quality, and only wants to buy it once............Nobody can look at a Rolex on your wrist and look down on it. They can try, but a more expensive watch on their wrist does not reflect a better, or more quality purchase.........only a more expensive one.

I have been here long enough to know that only once in a blue moon do we get the stereotype "Rolex Brand Yuppie" partcipating in posts.

They stand out like a sore thumb and tend to get rounded out of town by the TRF posse.

Well, to each his own. I cannot see why these wearing habits should be a clue to "Rolex snobbery"?

Snobbery seems to be a label put on people by those that don't share the same appreciation of a quality product, like Rolex, by people who can't afford to own these products.
