Wow. Awesome post Ken. This is a completely different level and tiny details can make one hit the jackpot or lose a ton of cash. My full admiration goes to the level of knowledge involved behind those numbers.

Disagree completely with last statement. New P-cars are technologically more advanced, however they have no soul. Ask anyone that is a driver.

I've now got both so the best of both worlds - a modern sea dweller\ a vintage sub

Sea Dweller - walk into AD\ they got shipped from a sister office\ tried on next day\ purchased - end of story

Sub - Years & years of research, looking\ learning\ listening to the guys across on VRF discussing & posting pictures\ advise from guys on here\ listening to the what to look for & what to avoid\ who the good guys are (sometimes - not )

Modern defo the easiest\ quickest way to get a nice watch.

Need to be patient\ willing to put the time\ effort into vintage

Same here .

But I have a selection of both modern and vintage pieces ,I never really got the vintage thing until this year after buying my first Rolex 21yrs ago it was always the new one from Basel,

Vintage really seams to do it for me at the moment ,having bought five this year , Flipped two keeping the three that make me happy

No doubt 6 digit references are better built watches but I tend to prefer 5 digit references.

You poll answers seem a bit tilted towards "why I don't like vintage ".

I appreciate both but lean towards the modern because of the upgrades. However, I do think that each collection needs at least one vintage piece.

Pros and cons with both though no doubt that some of the older models are more akin to the original toolwatch concept and some have gone on to achieve very significant value. This does not take anything away from the newer models however which benefit from technological advances. Great thing in any event is that we are spoiled for choice!

I've had vintage DJ and now own 6 digit GMT. The new bracelets feel so much better than the old ones, and give you a sense of security and finer build when compared to the old ones. I do miss the sound my old DJ use to make and the GMT is very quite and can't quite hear the "engine".

The changes to Porsches over the years have been made to make them safer, more economical and easier to drive fast. It's a matter of opinion whether that makes them better.

Give me an N/A engine over a turbo any day of the week. Ditto hydraulic steering versus EPAS. Arguably two of the most important systems within a sports car, engine and steering, have been sanitised by Porsche.

I am a big vintage fan and I like both just as much. My signature is my statement.

However, for every day wear modern models are more suitable because of upgrades such as better bracelets, lume, shock protection....

My oldest is 2008.
I'd love to buy vintage but am concerned about getting a piece that is not genuine 'as advertised" and, without the inside knowledge of a watch repairer, i wouldn't know.

I like the look of the 16710 GMT2 Pepsi, hence it's my only Rolex. I do generally prefer modern watches to vintage though. Unfortunately for me, the Pepsi GMT is now only available in YG at significantly higher prices than older SS models.

My Omega Speedmaster is a newer model. More accurate and improved movement (automatic wind vs. manual wind) compared to the older, more "vintage" types.

I love both but generally prefer newer watches.

Modern technology improves reliability, performance, durability and I like a new watch being a clean slate. I'm not buying a vintage watch for the history that came from the previous owner. I'm making my own history with it.

I never intended to become a watch collector. However, after buying 1 or 2 pieces i became seriously interested in collecting for no other reason apart from the quality, attention to detail and design.

I don't think i would ever have started with vintage watches. In fact, i did actually see vintage watches during my research on what to buy first, and i thought back then, why are they so popular.

Now i get it, i have probably purchased most of the watches i want to own and i want to build a vintage collection now.

I completely get the individuality of vintage pieces now. I'm not sure where this will go, but i know i would always started with new and modern watches.
