Honestly, you're just going to have to ask her to trust you on this one. Unless you have a track record of totally screwing up the finances, that request should do the trick. If you buy used, just send it to the nearest RSC for an "I told you so" trip...

I'm going to have to swim upstream here...

If money is no object, go with the AD. Otherwise, I would go with a trusted seller here. In the rare chance something goes wrong, they will bend over backwards to make it right. Then use the money saved to treat her to a romantic dinner and a nice bouquet of flowers. It's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

Semper Fi, Mac!

Why is she even involved in the discussion, buy the watch you want from whomever you want.

As been said, if any of the trusted sellers sold a fake, it would mean the end of their livelihood selling timepieces for a living. Do your homework on the references of these guys and buy with confidence and be happy. The money you save will more than buy a nice dinner and flowers for the wife.

I guess it would depend on the price of the watch. If you are talking a precious medal model I would highly recommend convincing your wife on the savings and going through TRF. If its just for a datejust or a stainless sports model then saving a $1000-$2000 may not be worth the fight.

Personally I wouldn't buy from an AD again unless the grey market dealers are no longer around.

I bought my Hulk here from seller "jizeal" and saved a bunch of money and had the watch delivered right to my door next day after the bank wire. I also have the warranty card from a US A.D. with my name on it dated the day of purchase. These sellers probably would be willing to talk with you and your wife about a prospective purchase to put your minds at ease. Many here including myself will not waste the hassle and extra money buying the A.D. route again. What are you in the market to buy?

p.s. I see that you reside in N.Y. So sales tax is what 8% there? For every 10K you spend that's 800 dollars in sales tax. Go the trusted seller route and you pay none! On top of the price discount.
Yup, its a basic high volume discount they get and pass on, and don't forget if they sell you a bad watch and don't make it right they will catch hell on this forum, lose many many tens even hundreds of thousands in lost business so they have absolutely no incentive to rip anyone off here and will bend over backwards to preserve their rep, something an AD will not remotely do as you are nothing to them with no voice.

I'd show her the numerous pages of positive feedback. I've bought 4 watches through the forum. 2 from DavidSW. All have been great/smooth/easy purchases.
Not that easy to have 30 odd pages of positive feedback stretching years...
We can't all be in on it

If it comes down to you absolutely not being able to convince your wife to buy from a trusted seller online then at the minimum, have your local AD ship the watch to someone you know out of state. That way you won't pay state sales tax on the sale.

Another way to convince your wife: explain to her the the cost difference between buying at the AD and buying online is roughly the cost of a new Louis Vuitton purse. Of course, you will have to buy the purse to prove your point, but that usually does the trick.

I just happened to stop by the AD today and tried on these three.

DJ II - Silver Stick - Smooth Bezel

DJ II - Blue Stick - Smooth Bezel

And the Explorer - 39mm

I like the smaller bezel on the Explorer and I also like the bracelet better. I'm not a fan of the PCL's on the DJ but I do like the date function.

x1000. And I am happily married for 20 years. Somethings you have to outrank her in when you are the most knowledgeable on the subject.

That blue dial DJ is very sweet! A trusted seller could source you any one of these BTW. Usually in a couple days or less. All you have to do is pull the trigger!

I don't know, there is something special about getting a watch from an AD though.

Hey Semper Fi, is the wife paying attention to and reading all the responses here? If she has cold feet about you buying a watch she should be!

Not cold feet about the purchase, just where to purchase. I think she'll come around eventually.

Good luck with the decision on both fronts. I have a DJ II and Explorer 214270. Hard to argue with the Explorer as a great one-watch option.

Have a look at buying from an AD in the Caribean, duty free and a discount. I found them so much cheaper than buying from an AD in the UK. The saving was put toward the holiday for both of us. Result
