This is great to see that he stuck to one watch all those years. I have great admiration for astronauts as well I think there are a special breed of men, I have the privilege to know Dr. Story Musgrave one of the legendary shuttle NASA astronaut who is by far the most fascinating man I have ever met.

I've always wanted to meet Jim Lovell. He was a childhood hero, as were all the orginal astronauts.

I did not personally attend the signing but had a piece for my collection signed and the signing included pictures of the event and pictures of Captain Lovell signing my piece.

Best response yet. I'm sure he had a thread in mind before he strapped on his GMT.

Is it safe wear your Rolex while station keeping on Gemini 6 for 13 days, sitting in the capsule while Buzz does his space walk on Gemini 12, while becoming one of the first 3 men to see the dark side of the moon on Apollo 8, or while cheating death and returning to Earth safely on Apollo 13.

Great thread and thanks for sharing with us...

Love seeing that gorgeous GMT which has been in its element in flight and space...

My GMT flies all over the world with me at work and hope to one day get to Capt Lovell's age wearing the same GMT thats flown with me all my career and reminisce.. :-)

All of those early astronauts were incredible human beings. Just to be selected was an amazing achievement, let alone what they did in space. It was truly an age of exploration and wonder. These unmanned probes are just so boring.

Great subject, thanks for sharing!

A really interesting post. Thanks for sharing.

As you are so well informed (and this is an area I know very very little about).

When did NASA astronauts stop wearing the Omega Speedmaster in favour of our beloved Rolex and was there a particular reason?

Many thanks in advance.....

They didn't, it was his personal choice. The Speedmaster was/is the only NASA certified watch. Daytona was tested and failed.

....Which makes me think, who's Speedy did they use to time the rockets on Apollo 13 re-entry? This is what won it the Snoopy award they made the special edition watch for.

I met General Chuck Yeager a few years back at a black tie event so I couldn't see it under his shirt cuff but was curious as to whether he still wore his old GMT.
These pictures sing to the history of the Rolex GMT; Thank you for posting this.

They were men and something to aspire to. They appreciated watches for what they are and not jewelry. Sadly, a dying breed in today's world. Thanks for sharing OP.

Actually he should have attended VMI ... My son is a Keydet at the Institute (but Army ROTC, hoping for infantry or armor). Just had to express the pride!

Incidentally, I met Jim Lovell once ... I had a chance to chat with him at length, and I bought a signed copy of his book Lost Moon. One of the great and true American heroes, and a humble, regular guy. What a day that was.
