It is just right for me, not too small or to big.

She didn't even hesitate; "I like the larger one, just looks better" she said. To those of us used to studying every detail of every model, the specific design differences between the two are "large," but to someone not obsessed with the model's history, one simply looked better than the other, at least in this instance. Not a scientific sample, for sure, but it was an interesting perspective. I will say also, at the risk of being buried in complaints, that when I looked at the DD 40 last week, the bezel looked kind of small to my eye because the dial is kind of large in comparison. My personal conclusion? The DD II is a markedly different watch than the traditional 36 mm DD, a new design in overall effect, the DD 40 has a retro, very conservative look, kind of a step back, and the DD II, if fitted correctly on the wrist, is sportier than both, but not garish or hideous.
I was getting some work done on my DJ (dial swap) and was at a shop; a random lady was there. She looked at the DJ and had a sort of "meh" response. She looked at the DJII on my wrist and almost swooned. It has a tremendous effect on the uninitiated. To the non-WISes, I think the IIs are much more engaging.

I agree. Interestingly, I actually liked the 36mm DDs at the AD better than the DD40s, but maybe because the dial selection was better? I know myself though. I'll probably be wearing the DD II and DD 40 before two years have passed!

Agreed!

The proportions are off. Owners of the DD2 may love it, but look at it from Rolex' view. They are discontinuing it after just a few years. The original DD is still here, the daytona and submariner will last and last. The reason the DD2 is gone is that it has been a failure for Rolex in sales and style.

OP:

People in general will convince themselves they hate something as a coping mechanism when they don't have it or can't afford it. It happens with watches, cars, homes, etc...
The way the haters talk you'd think the difference between the DD2 and DD40 was at least 5mm not a measly 1mm.

How likely is it that Rolex will rework date just 2?
I love the style of the 36mm date just but with 8+ inch wrist size, I think it's too small for me.

Is that a joke?

Maybe Rolex was jealous of itself, that's why they discontinued the DD2...

Seriously, listen to yourself. You're posting on The Rolex Forum. Many of us will have a DD40 within a year or two. I turn 40 in Oct 2016. Guess what I'm buying?

Just to be clear

We don't know, but we're all interested in what Rolex will do with the 3235 calibre.

In a way, Rolex has already re-worked the Datejust, just for women first. Look at the 2015 Pearlmaster. it's a Datejust at 39mm with the new calibre.

I don't think "hideous" and DD2 belong in the same sentence, but it is indeed oversized and the proportions seem a bit off. Same with the DJII. I tried on a DD40 recently and it was just perfect for my 7.25" wrist. Hopefully Rolex will introduce a DJ40 soon.

My wife who does not care for my obsession with watches recently went to the AD with me. I tried on a Hulk, Milgauss, DJ, and DJ2. She absolutely loved the DJ2 and felt the DJ was too small. I disagree but the wife is always right.

Personally, I am a fan of the DD II and may have picked one up, but found it was just a little too large for my wrist, which is odd because I owned a DJ II for 5 years before letting it go. The DD is the classic and the 36mm case is appropriate for that type of watch. It would be very hard to improve on a timeless classic like the DD and DJ.

In any event, here is my contribution to the OP's request. A side-by-side comparision of my DD with a DD II.
The 36mm looks like a ladies watch. I have 8" wrists and the DJ II fits perfect. I am deciding whether to wait and see the DD40 or finally buy a DD II. Either way, the 36mm is out for sure. Maybe for the wife.

36, 40, 41 all decent. I have had the 36 and 41 both were great. Probably will end up with a 40 at some point, doesn't really matter too much to me as long as I like the dial. At the end of the day if you have a rotation they all have their place.

Icon6 41mm DDII for me if I ever decide to own a PM Rolex....

I don't own an DD. I applaud Rolex for finally stepping up and upgrading the DJ line with the 41mm version. I bought a steel version with white stick dial in its second year of release, I love the size. Much much better than my TT Thunderbird! I have not seen the DD40 tho I might like the size after trying as I own a couple of 40mm Rolex. If I ever decide to own a PM Rolex my first choice will be the 42mm Sky-Dweller or the 41mm DD. For me the 41mm DJ is a great size and don't care what anyone else thinks.

This debate could run forever and still not arrive at a conclusion.

I would sum it up by saying - " if bling appeals to you, buy a DD2. If you equate bling with tackiness, run a mile."

As always, it is down to personal taste.

I am currently wearing the most boring looking Rolex ever, a 39mm Explorer and I love it. No bling or even PCLs, it is functional, understated and it suits me fine.

Regards

Mick

I just tried on the DD40 at my local AD (again) and did a side by side comparison to the DD2 (again)

As some of you know, I've been dithering over the platinum model and to me there is a pretty noticeable difference in the size. Specifically the thickness of the case. It must have something to do with the new movement.

Either way, both are equally beautiful in my eyes, but because of the movement and price being the same, I'd opt for the DD40. Now, I need a nudge

I don't like it because 41mm is too big on me- other than that, it's a DD to me. Don't see why Rolex can't offer the DD in all 3 sizes

I went to look at a 36mm YG Day Date the other week, but found it a bit small.
However I think the DD2 is just right for me, a great looking piece.

This is by far to me the best looking of the DD2's. I wish the 40mm had this kind of dial. I am not crazy about the new roman numerals they look meh to me. Also I am not crazy about hour markers.

I wish you took side by side photos, I still cant picture how a 1 mm size reduction can make so much difference.

It's not the 1 mm reduction, it's the proportions. In addition to the dd2 bezel being super sized, the bracelet remains smaller with the watch looking a bit "bloated" and/or "pregnant" compared to the classics well-established proportions. It is all subjective and many of us are influenced by decades of what a day date should look like. As for me, I don't mind the larger size because I have an 8" wrist, but I like the "better" design of the original and the new dd40

For those non WIS who don't know Rolex apart from the name and are part of the Fossil, Michael Kors, Diesel, Invicta, and Nixon generation, the DD2 stands out in the same way as the aforementioned where a 36mm does not

Look, it's all jewelry and just a matter of opinion I prefer the classic look, but for that much cash you'd better get exactly what you like! And figuring that out is half the fun!

I tend to like them in 41mm, especially those with the smooth bezel. To me the fluted bezel size "issue" never rang out to me until I read some opinions on it and then I noticed, but it doesn't bother me and they are still beautiful pieces.
I do think that the DD40 is proportioned more like the original in 36mm and Rolex doesn't do changes halfhearted, nor this quickly, so I believe they are adjusting for the market preference.

41 is not timeless. It's today's fashion size and already "old news" in a way! It's a great watch don't get me wrong. One of the reasons Rolex is timeless is due to the brand not following to a certain extent day to day "fashion"
