It's cheap, $10-$20. If your AD has the capability he may not charge you at all.

If they are the original spring bars -

Yes - 100% if set up correctly, I dive all the time, sometimes with NATO sometimes bracelet. Check your gear out and you won't have trouble.

Many stories of a NATO "saving" their watch are probably because of this action - it is even more likely to happen when wet. When spring bars are used on a bracelet the ends will have to physically shear off and that shear force would be tremendous.

When NATO's were issued, they were issued for watches that had welded bars that would never come out.

Don't get a NATO because you think it is safer, get it because you like the heritage and the look.
excellent info

Do you have the spec for the shoulderless bars you fitted (I just received some bars ordered online - and have just learnt that I need 0.9mm diameter pin ends - the old fashioned ones are 1.2mm. Bloomin frustrating! :)

If there's a 'proper' bar available I'd be grateful for the info.
Meanwhile, in order to spend a day in the sea today wearing a nylon strap without worrying about the spring bars opening themselves, I popped in to town yesterday and picked up some shoulderless 20mm lugs; some pics for any who may be interested:

The 'no lug hole' design relies on the end links to support the risible smaller diameter pins:

Shoulder compared with no shoulder:
