That watch would be the pride of most collector's showcase. Don't put her in a drawer. Safety deposit box. What you have is a the rolex equivalent of a 1960s Porsche 911.

Thanks for responses I'm still at a loss what to do with it as I honestly thought it was worth very little. I really would like to wear and enjoy but I'm guessing it will cost load's of money that we as a family simply could not justify or even have.

Would I be right in thinking that to put back to original it needs bezel and strap and hands ?

Obviously then the small problem of getting it working and presumably would you get the dial cleaned of all the spots and new glass or plastic whatever you call it ??

Sorry for all the questions as you can tell I know the square root of nothing.

Well I'm sure there are people on this forum who will take the problem off your hands! But you can always get a repair quoted, you don't have to restore it. I would suggest if you had the movement repaired/serviced and had the crystal cleaned up and also cleaned the grime off the case the watch would sell well to a collector who could then decide if they wanted to go any further with it. Or you could keep it and wear it of course. You need the right person to service the movement, ask for suggestions. Which Norfolk are you in?

With these vintage pieces you want to keep the watch as original as possible. It is best to not replace anything if possible. Replacing the bezel, hands and any other original parts will hurt the value. And definitely do not clean the dial. The dial is where most of the value is with vintage pieces. The more original with all of its imperfections from age is what collectors want to retain. Have it serviced and repaired by a qualified watchmaker that knows vintage Rolex timepieces well. Good luck

No, that would not be right..

You need a specialist and there are several in the UK.

It almost doesn't matter what you spend on it, if it is authentic it will be worth more regardless; unless, of course, you spend it wrongly, which changing hands or bezels would do.

Conact Superlative Time in west London. I too inherited my grandfathers 1953 pre-explorer in a similar condition, following a sympathetic restoration, it now keeps perfect time. Good luck.

Best of luck and congratulations. Safe to say your late grandfather had superb taste.
