Wow, now that Tudor Chorno (lol) really smiles at me.
I wish we had Tudors here in the States. |

I admire the Daytona, but wouldn't buy it due to the lack of date functionality.

I fully agree, I dunno why they stopped selling them here. I'm sure the U.S would have been a huge market for Tudor watches.

I concur with the original poster. Daytona's are cool, but I just don't see what all the fuss over them is about. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. I like the Datejust and Day-Date most, with the GMTII coming in 3rd, so to each his own.

Tudor sells in Canada but this model is no longer made. Can not find a decent picture of the current one but go to their site

I've turned down Daytona's on several occassions now and listened to the AD tell me how crazy I was. Just don't do it for me at all.

Like many others, I came to appreciate the beauty of the Daytona mostly via TRF. The beautiful white dial 116520 beckoned to me. Then I bought one and wore it. I love the size, the weight and the look... BUT (that's a big but) I can't tell the day or time when I look at it. I'm so used to the high contrast and larger hands of the Sub that I find it difficult to pick out the hour and minute hands among all the action on the Daytona dial. I also really miss the date function, since my job involves signing and dating about 100 documents a day.
I've found that I love to wear the Daytona for dress occasions, since it is prettier than my Sub, but I always wear the Sub for work. I'm now on the hunt for a Tudor Big Block Chrono 79160 with the white dial and black sub-dials. They are much more difficult to find than a Daytona, although much less expensive. |

It takes cajones to assert a position of not really liking the Daytona on TRF, but as you can see you are not alone in that regard. I will likely never own one as I do not see the value of the watch for its price. If it were priced the same as a Speedmaster, I would pick it over the Omega, but it's not, so the Speedmaster is going to be my eventual white dial chronograph acquisition.
I WILL say that the Daytona has grown on me since joining TRF, but not to where I would ever buy one unless I had lottery money. DoxaDavid's TT with the slate dial is particularly alluring, although I turned it down from our AD before he bought it. I've said no to my AD for Daytonas and Milgauss GV's because they don't smile at me for the price, and I'm not a flipper. It's also fair to mention that the great photos and stories on TRF brought me to my Explorer II which I never liked before joining, and I've even warmed to the Pepsi GMT, which I used to think was just awful.

I would take something else of the same or equal value...like a Blue TT Sub over a Daytona. It isn't my thing, either.

the name "daytona" has to be the worst rolex name as well in my opinion...might as well be "retired in Florida"

Not having a date feature is my biggest problem with the Daytona. It is a beautiful watch but personally I would go for a Speedy before the Daytona considering the price difference and of course the availability of the SS.

Its funny I am not really uber crazy about them as well but I can see myself getting one soon.
I need a watch for around 13-16 G (SS) I was looking at a Pan 10 day BUT thats really not practical for much wear beyond dress and I dont wear suits often. It amazes me, the datyona earns you more respect at a dealership than most any other Rolex.... What would you get for 13-16G? I wish I could afford a Plat. Day Date.... |

I never had enough money to even consider buying a Daytona, so I haven't thought about it. No date, is a bummer. Honestly, I could warm up to one if I had to.

I have a Daytona on order and recently purchased a Speedy Pro for just over 2K. It's a fantastic watch and only costs about 20% of the cost of the daytona. The Speedy is so good I'm starting to think I'm crazy to spend so much on the daytona.

Daytona is OK to me. But I never ever buy one, even I can. Why? Because I don't like chrono watch. But if someday I want buy a chrono watch, I'll go for Speedy (The key word is IF).
BTW I like a simple watch, not complicated watch. |

Ahh.... so I am not alone! I too do not like the Daytona. It just looks, well, oh it doesn't matter....
I know how much people lust after this model but it is not for me. Brozek uses it on the cove of his "Rolex report" book and it really doesn't do ANYTHING for me - much rather have the SD or a sub or whatever, but I think the Daytona's prices have been hyped up, and I don't think it's that good a look. But what do I know?! I know I'd still have one if one came my way and I had the money, so what a hypocrite I am! |

I like the Daytona fine... it looks great. Feature wise, chronograph for me would be below (1) date, (2) 60 minute timer rotating bezel and (3) dual time, in order of importance. Actually, I never really remember anytime I really had to use a stop watch. It might be nice to time traveling distances for long trips, but that is more for personal information.
I guess if I had (and could afford) four Rolex watches, the Daytona would be one. Am a long way from there. |
