We should open/hold doors for ladies and help them across the street, walk on the curb side to keep splashes off. You should not wear your hat indoors or wear white after labor day and you should always wear black to a funeral... and on and on..

But who really does much of this any more - today it's all about self absorption .

Interesting thread but every time I have attended black tie events I have always worn a watch, I take my style cues from Bond....James Bond

Amen. That is my house as well.

Some day some little girls dad will hate my son a little bit less because he holds the door and treats her like a lady.

As for the tux and a watch. I don't wear a tux often but when I do its one of these that gets me there on time.
I think a tux should not have a pocket for a cell phone. Nothing more annoying than someone checking Facebook every 5 minutes at a formal function.

I can't recall the last time I wore a tux. But I have always worn a watch (usually my YG DD; occasionally my Y series all black GMT-II) with a tux.

I ran into the same dilemma a few years back, but couldn't bring myself to spend a ton of cash on a watch that I didn't intend on wearing everyday. I settled for this. It checked off all the boxes & wasn't heavy on the wallet.

When I see someone checking their watch or cell phone constantly, I can't help but think that they'd rather be somewhere else. If so, you're invited to leave. Better yet, please leave. When I'm at a function, Church, or Lodge, the phone stays in the car. Don't plan on being called to perform a heart transplant, or asked for national security advice. Thus, I'm not really all that important!!!! (99% of us aren't either).

Back to the topic at hand. I'll wear a dress watch with a suit or tux. Since a dress watch on a strap is worn above the wrist bone, nobody sees it anyway. I fell naked without a watch!!

Children should never wear black to a funeral, only grey. Actually, a Church service is OK, but I'm not a fan of children at a viewing. I'm much rather my son remember grandma pulling a turkey out of the oven on Thanksgiving rather than laying in a box. PS, please take your hat off at the dinner table!!!

Hi there all posters on this thread....
interested in opinions about Arabic dials - in our progressive society, are Arabic numerals not as popular? I notice most watches are stick, roman, and also round or square hour makers, such as diamonds.

Do Arabic dials diminish value of watch, therefore?
Thanks, DM

Wonderful topic.... here we are pondering proper etiquette when wearing a tux for a formal evening....

Meanwhile I am 99.987878% sure when you get there that MANY people will have their faces buried in there phones all night.

I say keep the watch and make everyone check their phones with their coats.

Tony64 has it right. If you wear a watch with a tux it should be thin, dressy not sporty. The Patek in his post is perfect, something similar would be too. I haven't really paid much attention to the Cellini line but that would be the Rolex to wear although I am not sure as they might be too thick.

Now that I've said what "should be" just wear what you want.

Being raised on a farm in somewhat rural South Carolina, people had better count their blessings that I show up with shoes and a shirt. Pants optional.

And waiting for everyone to get their food at a restaurant before eating. This one has puzzled every single lady I've dated.

I learned this several weeks after a first date, but just had a plate and 8 screws put in my shoulder a week before said date (bicycle crash). Of course, I waited for her to get her food and start eating. She hesitated for a while, but finally started. She later told me that she thought I was expecting her to cut my food up for me because I was in a sling. Pretty funny.

The most acceptable compromise between a naked wrist and knowing when Cinderella's coach turns back into a pumpkin would be a thin and discreet gold watch, easily concealed under one's cuff. No chronos, multiple time zones, or fancy timing bezels. Hours and minutes only, no date, and if you must have a seconds hand than it should be a small subdial rather than a center sweep. Black leather/croc strap always, never a bracelet. Bling is your enemy. Prefer a white dial with sticks or Roman markers if where being particular, arabics seem a little less formal.
This^^^^^^

And if my school days and young adult etiquette memory serves me, during the evening hours, white gold or silver is worn to more compliment the white/silver glow of the moon. Gold was worn during the day to compliment the sun.

All this just reminds me of Miss World contests, maybe it is a bit of fun, maybe it is oppressive, maybe it is outdated, depends how you view it.

I wouldn't say that Arabic numerals aren't as popular, just a little less formal in appearance than Romans. You probably won't see many sports watches with Roman numerals on the dial. Actually arabics are probably MORE popular overall the more I think about it.

Personally I like both, and usually choose arabics for daily office wear, and Romans for more formal events. As for Arabic dials 'diminishing the value of the watch' - I can't see why, but I'll let you judge that for yourself.

Is the world any better now than it was before you could carry your phone with you? It seems about the same to me, except people seem far more distracted with meaningless minutia streaming past their eyes. If you've gone to the trouble to outfit yourself with a tux, it would seem you could be troubled to stay off your phone for the duration of the event.

While the etiquette is based on unnecessary distraction, I think formal wear is well accessorized by a nice dress watch.
