I'm definitely a PM sport watch guy. I feel the same way Tom does about the DD 40 and the SkyDweller.

Wow! I would have never known you were 72, I had dinner with Mr. Mailman in his hometown last weekend and I briefly mentioned how I have enjoyed reading your post during my more active times on TRF! Keep up the great content!

Have you driven the new BMW 750? Sport and luxury in a single package. My move to PM is both DD, Sub and Sky-Dweller models.

And then up back to Rolex my friend in the end.

As for me both SS and PM have a place in my collection. I wear and enjoy both.

I always wanted PM, but couldn't even afford a G-Shock.
Now I can afford it, but I still wear steel. It's more comfortable than having a half pound on my wrist while working.

I leave the PM for going out and making my old girlfriends jealous.

I probably won't do it! Just a little too old for me, even when I'm 60, I can't imagine wearing those

Like Tom and Eric say I think for most it is primarily an affordability issue or to be more precise having the right mentality to contemplate affording a PM piece. With me it took some time to think seriously about buying a PM piece as they are 4/5 times the cost of SS, but as TRF is the great catalyst, I got there far quicker than I imagined. I also never thought I'd go for a DD, thought they were too dressy and old fashioned but they really are sports/dress watches with lots of modern touches to them and so age is not a real determiner, rather personal taste and style is.

Me too. Although I still have a 16613 as it was my first Rolex model back in the late 80's. Dressed up more at work and play back then, so a YG DD was in rotation for a long time. The 16613 will probably go pretty soon on trade for another vintage piece. Rarely wear it anymore.

Almost 50 now and have the vintage bug--really bad. Funny though, nice vintage sport examples are in the new PM watch price range...

I start with a sub in my early 20's, gradually moved to TT sub, then several gold DD's, then to a couple platinum DD's, then to a couple platinum Pateks. I've gradually gone back to only SS sport Rolex models. I feel I've come full circle. The Rolex SS sport models fit my very active and casual lifestyle best.

I have all sports watches, but that is just my preference. The others are really nice, just not for me.

I've always loved SS sports models. I've owned 3 DJ's and a TT Sub and all were sold.

I have both and age wasn't really a factor as much as finances. I started with a Tudor sub at 14 and a 1675 Pepsi at 16. I got my 1st DD at 30 and am back to Rolex SS sports watches mostly now at 44. If finances were better I would just have more of both. Have the vintage bug now and thats more than PM models. I also went fro Rolex to AP to PP and now am back wearing mostly Rolex although I still have PP's taking up space in the safe.

Age isn't a factor, and who decided that gold watches were a "move up".

Gold watches were all the rage in the 70's, everybody had one.. Well, the 70's are long gone as are the fashion fads.

I still have gold watches, and TT watches.. the gold hardly ever comes out except for an extremely appropriate occasion; they just aren't in fashion much now days..

Spot on, my friend.

For a few years now, my AD contact has said to me that financially I am ready, but I need to be mentally ready as well to purchase PM watches. Once you get over the first one, the others will be easier.

I guess he was right.

I only have SS sports models right now as at this time in my life that is all I can afford. When I am older and more settled there are PM watches that I would love to have. I would still buy SS watches but I would love a PM Sub and GMT for example and a DD would be nice too. My list is endless and contains SS and PM but right now the PM isn't feasible for me.

I started with aa TT DJ for my first Rolex. I wanted an all around nice watch. That first one was a big deal and abig purchase. When I reached retirement and was able to afford it, I bought a SubC, my first sport watch. Now as I reach my 70th birthday, I rounded out my collection with a DD in YG. That is my personal taste. I wanted it for a classic Rolex dress watch. I figure if not now, when??

Couldn't do the poll.
My history with Rolex
In order
GMT
Daytona 1983
TT Bluesy
GMT
Daytona Zenith
TT Bluesy
18kt Blusey
Sea Dweller
SS Datejust

Next on the list WG Daytona or YG Root Beer

So I don't think I fit the poll

Later 50's here and looking to sell/trade my SS Daytona and get into a PM Daytona. Not ready for full gold bracelet, prefer the strap like a 116515 or 116518….working on it.
