You really have to go with what makes you happy. The DD might be an itch that you just need to scratch regardless of what anyone says.
That said sounds like you a win win either way. Good luck and congrats in advance. |

If you saved for a DD40 and want a DD40, then you should get one. I wouldn't let the perception that Patek is "better" sway your decision unless you like that particular Patek more than the DD40.

DD. I honestly think it looks better and is a better daily. Also if you have been saving and wanting it for a long time go with that. Others may think the Patek is a better choice but you will always be second guessing yourself.

Prefer the 5205 but the dd40 has been perfected honestly you won't regret any so it has to be a coin toss between them

I m a fan of PP but considering the DD more verstatile especially that Rolex recognized the design fault of the last era of their watches and nicely corrected.get the DD.

You should buy what you really like, not buy what others think you should like.
That said, I own a 5205R and it's a gorgeous watch. |

You're lucky to have this problem. I'd go Patek. Although, I imagine it would be hard to go back. So be it. Patek is my grail.

Well if you are going to let someone else influence what watch to buy after years of saving then I would probably listen to my wife and close friends over strangers on the internet. I would think they would know you and your tastes and lifestyle better. But since you have decided to solicit advice from strangers on the internet and you chose a Rolex forum, the only place in the watch world where Rolex would have a chance over PP, I think subconsciously you came here hoping to get pushed toward the Rolex.
Since it sounds like you started saving before Rolex introduced the DD40 what watch did you have in mind when you started? To me these two watches are very different to the point where if one was truly my grail the other one would not even enter the thought process. Just the fact that one is on a band and the other is on a strap is odd when discussing a grail. After saving for years and when talking about your grail, the perfect watch for you, you would think the band vs strap decision would already have been decided. If the DD is what you wanted when you started then stick with it. |

Try them both on then decide which one YOU want.
Then be prepared to hear your wife say "I told you but you wouldn't listen!" For the rest of your life if you choose the Rolex and regret it! |

The DD is an iconic Rolex watch. The DD is your grail watch. The DD is what you want. Why listen to others? If you get that Patek over the DD, every single day of your life you will be asking yourself "what if?.....". A Patek is a excellent watch on another level. But that patek in the picture is quite boring. I would get the DD first and then one fine day get another model of a Patek.

A gold offshore is really not a mid-point between a DD40 and a 5205. If there is any concern over brashness of a DD40 an Offshore in gold is another level of brashness again on top of that...

IMO, the DD is what the OP has been lusting after all this while. But besides spending that kind of money to satisfy himself, he wants others to acknowledge that he made an excellent choice as well. When other's started to doubt his choice, he's conflicted. Dear OP, listen to your heart and go for the DD.

I sympathise after a similar decision
In the end I took a gold rolex I'd never had gold before but I'd had 11 rolex I'd never had patek either Rolex primarily won me over for lifestyle and age specific reason... You never have to take it off!! Had I of been 10 yrs older and less active the refined pp would be the one.. Who knows in ten yrs time now I've had my gold rolex itch scratched I might swap & then I'd of had both I think progressive evolution should come into it - I wouldn't appreciate the rolls Royce before I'd tried a Ferrari sort of thing |

Personally I think the Patek is beautiful. One of the few Patek's I like. But way out of my price range for a watch. I spent less on my last new car.
If you saved for years for the DD40, the Patek is $10K above that and I assume that will take a good bit of time to save, delaying your purchase for awhile. The DD is a classic and the new 40mm size is perfect. (I'm hoping the DJ40 is next year) So here is how to figure this out... get a coin, assign Heads to the DD40 and Tails to the PP. Flip it and pay attention to your first reaction. If it lands on heads and you feel excited and relieved, the DD40 is what your heart wants. If it lands on Tails and you are disappointed, again it is the DD40. |

Go with that Day-Date 40 RG beauty and add the 5205 later if needed!

Chaps
I can fully understand the ethos of "it's your money, so buy what you like" and in the main, that is fair advice. What we have in this instance is the choice between a very loud and ostentatious watch and one with less visual impact. Whether we like it or not, we do get judged on what we are, what we wear etc etc. When I see someone wearing a flashy gold watch with a chunky gold bracelet, my attitude is the person is attracting attention to themselves in a negative way. The Chocolate Rolex is such a watch, it is just to loud for its own good. The Patek is a good example of how a gold watch should be. It looks classy and discreet and puts the wearer several notches above the wearer of a loud flashy all gold monstrosity. I know it is all subjective, but if you don't give a damn what others will think of you, then wear whatever. If you are image conscious, especially in your working environment, be much more circumspect. Regards Mick |

I think you've wanted the DD for such a long time and that has been your goal that is what you should get.
However, I think you should also buy a leather strap for it so you get the best of both worlds. |
