Just got the watch yesterday from Brit78 here on TRF. I'm away for two days and knew there was an AD where I'm traveling. I wanted to get it sized before Monday, when I'll be at work in Manhattan near the RSC. Figured it would be easy at any AD...guess not. I would have paid $10 or $20 for their time (they do have to make money, after all), but $50 was outrageous. I'll let everyone know how it goes at RSC, and at least I'll get some nice chocolates.

Probably a judgement call by the salesperson at the time. If they saw future business in you they probably would have done without a charge.

I frequent a tire shop for my cars, they offer free flat repair for any tires purchased from them. Took my Infiniti in because I had a nail in the tire and the guy asked if I had purchased them there and I told him not those because they came with the car, but that I had purchased there before and I would come there for replacements and he fixed the tire at no charge. Just good customer service.

Prior tire shop I used didn't offer a road hazard warranty and 2 weeks after spending over $800, they had the nerve to charge me $12 to fix a flat...never went back there again.

$50 is just not right. $20 okay... I'd pass and go elsewhere

I know at Rolex Canada, they will adjust your watch for free. In one of my cases, I needed a couple of screw replaced because they were damaged and burred by the dealer who sold me the watch years ago when he was adjusting the bracelet. I was more than willing to pay for the service and screw replacements but Rolex Canada would have none of it and replace the screws at no cost. In an obtus kind of way, I was a little disappointed because I wanted an official Rolex service bill for my records in case I ever wanted to re-sell the watch.

$50 to remove a link!?

AD north east UK did mine on Monday for free, took all of 5 minutes. I do see it from the sales persons point that they are not making money / generating sales while out the back making a 5 minute adjustment. That is if they are getting the charge for themselves..

It should be standard through the all AD's though , either a small charge or no charge. I don't see why they should be different answers from a variety of different stores..

I need to remove a link from my watch too, bought SD screwdriver and the screw just wouldn't budge and I'm going to Sydney on monday. I figure I'll just drop by RSC to get it done.

Screw probably has loctite on it. My AD heated around the screw and then it broke the seal and came out.

I work a few blocks from RSC NY. Will they do that for free or a nominal fee?
Just cannot understand why you do not DIY its just a screw and most people can unscrew and re-screw a simple screw its not like its rocket science.Cannot see why the RSC would not do it for free, but its very simple to do yourself. You just need a 1.6mm screwdriver and perhaps a little heat if it has loctite in the threads a simple hair-drier or hot water will do the trick.

Just after I received my SubC Date last year from DavidSW, I took an eyeglasses screwdriver and removed a couple links myself - it probably took maybe 5 minutes (I was freaking out a bit but it turned out to be no big deal). I now find myself needing to remove another link, but this time I'll use a micro-screwdriver for better grip on the screw. After it's done I'll take the $50 I saved and my kids to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the Blackhawks game over beer, soda and wings.....

I can't believe there aren't more people that have done this themselves.....

I tried dipping a portion of the bracelet in boiling water and it still wouldn't budge, should try other method instead?

I would "out" the AD on here. I think thats just awful customer service and sense of value. Charging $50 for a link removal. I cant imagine trying to get a discount on a watch.

Outing the AD is not going to make any difference or achieve anything sir .

It's as simple as this, you do not like the price or the service just leave.

Why damage their reputation?

At RSC, it will be free and if you do not wear the watch, they will place it in a nice green pouch for you with a Rolex cloth. You get a lindt white chocolate on the way out - win/win!

I have had several independent watchmakers remove links and charge ~ $20 each. But they were not at an AD and had no incentive for me to return to purchase a watch from them.

I had one AD have their in-house watchmaker come out and do a "complementary" bracelet re-sizing on my SS Daytona.

I think $50 is too much and I wouldn't pay that to remove a few links.

Do it yourself, I believe man and ape are species that have developed brains and can use tools lol. Just kidding seriously I am with Padi it's just a screw get the correct tool $20 dollars 1.6mm hollow ground tip if your fussy and use some boiled water to heat the locktite just on the band. It won't hurt the band or the watch.

My day date came a wee too big so I called my local AD, explained I had a Rolex I needed a link removed from and was told to come by and they'd remove the link - no charge.

I've never had to pay that I can recall, but I'd never just randomly stop into someone's place of business expecting to be given goods or services free of charge if it's not policy no matter how many times I may have gotten the same service gratis in other locales.

I'm always prepared to pay something or I wouldn't walk inside. What follows is just a matter of price and how much value they place on the goodwill factor.

$50? Too much price, not enough goodwill.

If I'd put it in a G-string after a few beers, I'd certainly pay it to get a link removed, but that's just me

I get the argument that no AD is obligated to perform unpaid work, but $50 to size a watch is higher than usual

I've been to an AD that would size a watch in exchange for a $10+ donation to wounded military vets. Seemed like a cool idea.

Just buy the correct size screw driver and some Loctite and do it your self. The most I have paid was $20 and it was for my 5980 1R and it was worth it as the bracelet has pins that need to be removed carefully. I might guess that AD doesn't want your future business.

I bought a watch from a TRF reseller and had it done locally for 15.00 at a jeweler. That was fair to me but 15 is a lot to remove a link.

I would expect to pay for this, but 50 is a bit steep.
As an AD I however I would not charge for this, good opportunity to create a relationship with a potential customer.
