Your son is doing great, finding a job I like for youngsters. Reward him for this and motivate him even more by presenting the watch on his 21st birthday. To make it really special an inscription would be a nice gesture. (Contrary to general belief this can easily be reversed, 10 minute job)

Your perogative. I would err on graduation. Might provide a little extra incentive. What a perfect Rolex to start with. Lucky guy to have a dad like you.

No not getting myself a replacement, although that would be a good excuse!

Wait for Graduation. That was the original deal. I think he will appreciate it more knowing that he earned it.

21 is just a birthday. He will probably just go out and get banged up a few times anyways, probably best he wasn't wearing it when he turns 21. Lol, good luck

I'd say graduation, but 21 isn't a bad deal either. I would say that if you think he's deserving now then go for it! Sounds like a good kid!

Graduation. It's a more important accomplishment than turning 21. He's a lucky kid either way.

Graduation is something earned, an achievement probably deserving a special reward if you're inclined to give one.

For those not battling a disease or growing up in war/famine zone, turning 21 is nothing except being (supposedly) 3 years into adulthood. Not a big, special deal at all. Don't cultivate the Special Snowflake Syndrome.

The 3rd option would be to leave it to him when you die. The day we fall off the perch ranks up there near the top of special occasions any of us will have, plus, he'll learn the virtue of patience in the meantime.

Nothing was promised or said, would be a total surprise for him if and when I give it to him. AM working on something now and will update.

As everyone said, that's a graduation gift. A case of beer for the 21st bday would be more appropriate than a Rolex.

Should I?

Coming from someone who just turned 28 this month - I got $300 for my 21st birthday present (as opposed to the usual $50) and nothing upon graduating when I was 23. Now we didn't come from much and I worked and paid my way through college. I'm not ungrateful - my parents were always there to support me at every turn the best they could. However I was (and still am) envious of others who got a graduation gift. For most of my peers it was a grad trip, for some it was a car. To me, the message sent was "we're proud of you for working hard and coming this far". I never got that kind of recognition despite the fact I was a bit of a rebel growing up and mixed with the wrong crowd, finally saw the error of my ways and decided to turn my life round when I was 19. An aunt mentioned in passing a couple of years back my mother actually never expected me to make it to college and she'd have been content if I just managed to stay out of jail. It was probably a slip of the tongue; she tried to switch the subject almost immediately afterwards.

The 21st present while very gratefully received, did not mean much more than what I got for my other birthday. Like others have mentioned, it does not take much to live to 21 years of age in a first world country.

Long and short of it - a birthday present would probably be seen as a special treat, whereas a graduation present would send a message of recognition. I get watches for myself these days as a treat but it would not hold as dear a place in my heart as a recognition gift would, be it a Casio, Seiko or Rolex. You should consider what it would mean to your son rather than let your want to give him something very special take over. Bluntly - is giving this to him as a 21st feeding your ego in a way?

You know your son better than we do.

Give it to him when you think he deserves it.

I do agree that graduation is more of an accomplishment than turning 21, though.

As Hans Wilsdorf said, "A crown for every achievement."

I asked forum members for an opinion and most were nice enough to give me their constructive thoughts, except for you. So you think you had a hard life ? Who are you to judge me? So boo hooo you got only $300 for you graduation so what I got nothing. I am a parent and I thinking of doing something nice for my kid. If you don't like it move on don't spout some sanctimonious BS to me about you having to buy your own watches....everyone buys their own watches here. The only one with an ego and a freaking big chip on his shoulder is you. If you are envious of people getting watches as graduation gifts, too freaking bad...nuff said

Graduation.

When someone inevitably asks about the watch, not only do you have an interesting timepiece to discuss, but the conversation leads on to his accomplishments.

Trust me on this. It's great to say one's Rolex commemorates an outstanding personal achievement.

All the best,
Andrew.

Great move!
Bought the same watch, when my son was born. Plan to give it to him when i'm old and will be wearing it untill then.
Back to you. Save it untill graduation: he will have special memories whenever he looks at his beautifull watch!
