Gold is out of style, it's as simple as that.

Many folks have posted astute observations about PM and wear-ability.
I think we as a Rolex community think that our SS, are just regular watches and the PM are more special. In my experience, most non-Wis people only see or recognize, "ROLEX" I have never got is that a Gold Rolex, or is that the New Smurf...lol I have talked to people about their own Rolex, and they really didn't have a great grasp of what they really had on their wrist. All I ever get in my Blue collar community is, "Is that a Rolex?" --->Oh, and I had to say something about this: and with 145 posts, you are the temperament of the tide sir...

Gold isn't popular in jewelry, cabinetry, car paint, auto emblems, rings.....gold just isn't happening. Where Rolex is at its finest with gold is in an old model from the 1950s, it looks quaint and slightly retro-charming that way. That's mine above, I love looking at it in photos but just can't bring myself to wear it. Gold is out and I'm always in. |

Prefer the color of steel
Actually prefer the color of titanium even more (and the lighter weight) Color of WG and platinum OK too, but not the additional weight nor greater vulnerability to scratches/scuffs Being "precious" doesn't have extra appeal to me, at least not presently |

I believe, if you wear it appropriately, and act appropriately, gold is classy and timeless.

Ahh yes does my cabinets match my Rolex Gold is never out when worn by someone with style. That said, I prefer SS watches for the following reasons beyond price: 1) it's lighter and hence more comfortable 2) it's more rugged 3) more subtle 4) I prefer sports watches so it's also more classical

The only reason I do not go yellow or rose gold is my skin tone. It just does not look right on me. That is why there is a white gold DD40 and Sub C in my near future. PM has a very different feel compared to SS models. Once you wear a PM Rolex, it changes you.
Cheers! |

Harvest Gold (along with Avacado) was the 'in' color for kitchens across America in the 1970's, which is also when gold Rolexes were socially acceptable. |

A more interesting question to ask the forum members is, if you had a choice between a WG, YG and RG watch, which one would you choose and why? I don't know what the sales numbers are like for RG vs YG vs WG Rolex watches, but I would imagine YG is still the most popular gold watch color amongst the three. |

LOL, no, listen I actually like gold watches. Over the course of the last decade I tried to single-handedly bring gold back into vogue. I tried Rolexes, I even bought a Pulsar Big Time and an Executive, nothing worked. And to show you I'm on the level, I just snapped this photo. I believe I am the only with WIS alive who bought both a white and yellow gold wedding band in 1996 so I could have a perfect match if and when gold ever came back into style (my wife still mocks me). |

YG is too loud for me and I've yet to see a YG watch that made me think "man, one day...". My 26 year old son bought a gold sub w/ blue dial a while back. I cringed a bit. He sold it 2 months later because he felt it was too flashy.
Those of you who have gold watches...rock on. They probably do look great in the right setting with the right attire. I own a 2015 SS Daytona and many on here would never wear it, let alone buy one. Variety is the spice of life! |

I don't like to attract attention. A y gold watch would be too much for me.

Now you went and done it. You said that name. Now they will shut this thread down, make it disappear like it never happened and hide it in that giant warehouse where they hid the arc of the covenant in Indiana Jones.

Listen, I'm on your side. I want gold to come back. I'm ready for it. I've tried to make it work in my social circles, it always ends with a thud. Here's another photo I just snapped, my 1957 and my 1960 up against my two 1996's. |

If I try to go gold again (sigh) I will get a white dial 6605 and put it on a brown strap, tone it down a bit. |

I don't prefer SS watches, I prefer watches I like, regardless of the material.

I don't have more that a couple of gold pieces and they are on straps. I do have a TT GMTC and it's probably my favorite watch, but that's about as far as I can go with it. An all YG rig just doesn't look right on me though it looks great on many others. Now WG or Pt, wouldn't mind those.

SS weighs much less vs PM......so less fatigue on the wrist.
PM scratches easier. SS is less expensive to insure. SS is much easer to flip.......lower price = more buyers. New PM watch drops more in value (%) immediately after purchase from RolexAD vs SS.
