These is so much more competition for wrist space these days... and attention span in general.

28 here! I love them. My 2 year old son is already showing interest.

Can't wait to keep adding fuel to that fire!

My eldest son (15) is excellent for watch wearing, but still into G-shock - suits his lifestyle of constant football (okay, soccer) and he's allowed to wear in in training and for matches.
The middle one (12) also has a G, but constantly forgets to wear it, but then it's a mandatory off for rugby so with him it's got to be off more than on.
The youngest (9) has just got his first G-shock and is learning to wear watches and again can wear it for football.
But my daughter (10) is obsessed with my sub and constantly asking to borrow it!! I'm going to need to come up with a solution soon!

So I think apart from a blip in the middle the future generation watch-lover project is getting there

I am 22 and have had an interest in Rolex watches since 18 when I bought my first datejust. I always comment on other people's rolexs when the situation is there, which is mostly men that are my dads age (50's). They always seem a bit surprise because I usually call them out by the model they have.

That makes perfect sense. Buy an iPhone and 6 months later it's outdated. Buy a Rolex and it just grows in value and is never outdated. Millennials will eventually understand that it gives us a sense of eternity to hang on to something that lasts and lasts. Makes you feel like you just might as well...

Its hard for most 20 somethings to drop 10k for a submariner.
Back in the days when you guys went up hill to and from school in the snow everyday, they were $600 watches. Inflation and salaries don't match up.

I consider myself blessed and worked my ass off, most millennials who do have a Swiss watch have collections that exceed 95% of TRF.

I'm 32, and I think I'm technically a millenial (born in 1984) and Ive been collecting and flipping vintage Rolex for 10 years. but yes, i can name only a very small handful of hs/college/etc friends who own a swiss watch.

I'm 25 and I'm the only guy I know my age whose into vintage and modern (Rolex PP AP Vacheron Lange etc..) watches for the pure love of the craftsmanship and history behind them. Living in Dubai I can tell you there are a lot of young guys with money to throw around, and why not, good for them! But in most cases its for the status and not for the love of the engineering and craftsmanship of the movement and the watch in general. But maybe that changes with age in most people.

My son definitely is. Gave him my 16610 off my wrist the night he graduated college and he doesn't take it off.

Let's face it, regardless of the generation kids grow up and become interested in things timeless and elegant in their simplicity and craftsmanship.

I certainly think that each generation will have a core group that appreciates mechanical watches - my only conern is will that group dwindle over time?

I think the sad answer is yes, definitely. I'm 36 and kind of see myself inbetween 2 totally different generations. I know many older gentlemen that have an appreciation for a quality mechanical timepiece. And although I know several younger people that feel the same way, I know more that don't care for a watch - because they have the time on their phone.

Also, with the addition of these smart watches (Apple Watch etc...), although in their early phases now, eventually they are going to be capable of some pretty crazy stuff. Just think 10-20 years down the road... these watches will probably monitor our health to some degree.

Depending on what they can do, it might almost become a standard device that everyone wears.

I don't know if money is a major hindrance for young men buying a wristwatch as they don't have to start with a Rolex. Even a less expensive Seiko automatic would be a fine watch to start with. I think it has more to do with if other people in their life wear a watch, including their parents, peers, co-workers and how much of an influence they have on the young man.

Fast forward ten years and they have started to transform into middle age where the reality of raising children and paying the mortgage takes over and it is usually at that stage where the big boys toy syndrome kicks in. We all need some excitement in life and good quality watches and cameras etc fulfill that need.

Quality becomes the main aim and we are all living proof of that and a good watch will always be a priority.

I see your point, but what about the large number of 20 (and 30) somethings who don't wear a watch at all? When I was 18 I didn't have an expensive watch, but I had a watch and I was doing my fair share of what you mentioned above!

I'm a 20 year old dealer. Been in the trade for two years now, got my start by working with an auction house. No one in my family cares about watches to be honest. I hope and pray there's a future, it's my passion!

I'm an older millennial (33) and got my passion for watches from my father. He collects watches and clocks. Although he never really stepped into "high end" watches as I have it's still a fun hobby that we share.

[QUOTE=juliet;6652825]Do you think the possibility of a lack of interest is in part due to the prices of these watches?

I saw an advert, on here I think, of a 1964 explorer by Rolex. The price was just under $200. Adjusted for inflation that comes to about $1500 in today's dollars. Instead that watch now costs about $6500. That's a big difference for those buying today.

/QUOTE]

Yep I definitely think pricing can impact enthusiasm for a non essential product.

Also when I see inflation numbers I always wonder how much currency changes should weigh into the calcs, for example the USD was worth about 4 CDF in the mid sixties - now the USD is worth just under 1 CHF - does that mean the inflation adjusted cost of the 1964 explorer be around $6,000 today?

As soon as I could afford it, in my late 20's, I bought my Panerai and my Omega PO.

I belive many milenians are into watches but they can't fund an expensive one such as Rolex.

I guess I'm a mellinoial...
50th anniversary sub
Explorer II
I catch myself looking at nearly everyone I meets watch and it's pretty rare to run across a Rolex on someone my age.
It takes everything in me to not laugh at the gents who spent $1000-$3000 on tags and especially Joe Rodeos..
