Several years ago I was cooking for one of my club's events and one of the visitors came over to watch and I complimented him on his TT Sub.

During our conversation I noticed that the gold on the clasp had worn off.

I managed not to miss a beat, though and smiled all the while I was serving his burger.

What else was there to do?

He'll probably find out soon enough anyway. You told him it was quite rare which is a point that wasn't lost on him as you said he was pleased to hear that. He will probably have gone home and started googling the watch to try to value it. He could be searching for a long time. He might even come across this post!

Yes, he showed it to me. It purported to be a Submariner, not a Submariner Date.

It impressed me as a fake as a two-tone steel and fold Rolex Submariner 14060/14060M doesn't exist.

It's either a modification or a fake. I think if it was a custom modfication, he would have detailed that when I complimented on its rarity.

Indeed, that reference is so rare, it doesn't exist. I suppose it would be the 14063 or 14063M.

I hadn't thought of the possibility before, but I guess a person might put a TT bracelet on a Sub.

It's not something I'd do, but some people might.

Did it have a gold bezel?

I'm the opposite, wear the real thing but tell everyone it's a fake.

Agreed with how you handled that, Vinnie.

I know a guy that has a two tone tag huer bracelet on a 16610. When he commented on my 16610, he automatically mentioned that he had tag before buying the sub. After getting the sub, he missed the TT, so he just swapped bracelets.
To each his own.

Whoever made the copy or fake forgot to add the date and
Gold on the bezel, dial and crown ...

in that case it could actually be an early two tone sub that came with an ss clasp...

Very classy move, he was being nice, no need to cause a negative situation. I had a similar experience once but first... I am sorry for being a Dorklehead, but TT subs? They DO exist.... Don't they?

Anyway on to my similar story, one day many years ago I was at some shop, there was a young kid, maybe 18, 20 years old, working the cash register. He had on what was an obvious fake Sub, for so many reasons I won't bother to list, but it was not even a GOOD replica. This was in my Navy Pilot days and I was wearing my GMT. I actually was trying to be nice and said something along the lines of: "Not a bad job, that almost looks real" He said: "It IS real" Now, being the natural SOB that I was (am) I lifted up my arm to show him my GMT and what a real Rolex looks like, and point out the obvious issues that made his a fake, when he said: "My father gave it to me as a graduation present." ... ... ....

DOH! I lowered my arm, said something along the lines of: "Looks very nice" and left. I don't know why, it certainly was none of my dam business, but it made me feel bad. I am just VERY glad I didn't do what an SOB like myself would do and point out it was a fake. No need to make a negative situation.

What situation?

So if it was real it's ok?

I don't agree with fake people wear fake watches garbage.

There's plenty of fake people who wear real watches.
