Big Fan of the Aquanaut

You can wear it dressed up or down. It flies under the radar. It's thin and feels weightless. You've got a great Patek movement. It's more than durable for everyday wear. There's a bit of apparent ignorant snobbery akin to "experts" believing the Cayman and Boxster are not proper Porsches, but if you've studied your topic you know that neither is true. So what's not to like?

It might be the entry-level Patek in price, but I would hardly call a stainless watch on a rubber strap that sells for nearly $20k entry-level. It's still a Patek, and if you need any convincing just look at the caseback. I love all of my Rolex's, but open one up and it's far more a diesel workhorse than a Ferrari engine driving it. Nothing wrong with that, they rarely break and need very little service, but it's far from a piece of art.

It seems to be very popular to bash the Aquanaut, but it often comes from Rolex owners who say that "real" Patek enthusiasts hate the watch, but oddly I've never actually heard that from a Patek owner, casual or serious collector.
Based on price. I know a patek is a patek. Thanks for the long explanation.

I would hate an "entry level" Dufour or Greubel

I have both and think they serve different purposes. My 5164 scratches super easy, but the travel time is one of the most well executed dual time zone functions. Additionally, the watch is really inconspicuous, which makes it great to travel with. My rose gold YM is both stealthy and luxe. The ceramic bezel makes it a bit more durable. Comfort is probably a toss up. The Oysterflex is amazing, but the 5164 is quite a bit lighter.

Aquanaut is junk
Nautilus is the Patek sport watch

Also Patek is all show, I'll climb a mountain in a Rolex.
I'll make cell phone calls on a Patek.

Wow way to contribute

Now back to the OP's actual question.

Both great watches. Never owned either but tried on both. The YM is simply stunning. My only gripe is that the strap is not quite flush with the lugs. It's a minor problem but keeps it from being 100% perfect. The 5167 is beautiful. It truly flies under the radar. It's light and full of detail. Anyone who says anything about an entry level patek is a chump.

Maybe it comes down to do you want A PM model that says Rolex or a SS model that says Patek. First world problems!

I don't know why, but I like that the Oysterflex is not flush with the case... I have a Breitling Avenger 2 Seawolf that's the same way... I guess I just like the crude, rugged aspect of it.

x2. People who bash the aquanaut are the same people who would bash people wearing an Explorer 1 as it is an "entry level rolex". Completely absurd .

To answer the OPs question, the YM is beautiful, but personally it isn't for me because SS is more my style. I never tried it on, so can't comment on fit and comfort. Comparing the SS YM aesthetically I'd rather have a sub or dssd, which I do. I vote Aquanaut!

I'm sure you'd opt to wear an explorer, exp2, or sub to climb a mountain. Who'd want to wear a patek or pm rolex and risk it getting dinged?

Well it's the same movement and I prefer the numerals vs the stick dial (I have an AP RO in my sights), so the Aquanaut was the real one to get for me!
