Great choice. I'm considering a PF also as its all about what's on the wrist and to me they are the pinnacle of watches. I love your 2 choices. Congrats

Thanks Alan! Quote:
Thanks Tony! Quote:
From now on I am only focusing on quality and what I really want the most (within my budget). Feeling a small super high quality 3-4 piece collection will be my equilibrium point, even if models come and go. Quote:
Quote:
thought and research, I decided to do a redo and change things up. Quote:
I think I am finding my inner horological voice and DNA, so moving forward I don't suspect I'll be flipping so quickly anymore. I am finally getting better with cars, have had my 911 GTS almost a year and a half, and my X5M a year (which is good for me). And its not as bad as it seems. The RG YM was a return to AD the next day, all stickers remained on and the extent of my wearing it was for taking pictures. The PEPSI reference is going because honestly its a bit too flimsy for me, the power reserve is too short and it doesn't live up to the SubCs and Ceramic Rolexes I have had. Plus I think there were issues in the one I got, so nothing against this vintage watch. My WG Sub, lasted 10 months, my SS Daytona, 9 months and my SS Sub (before the Pepsi), I had for TWO years. The 5711 last year was sold because of IRS issues and needing the money. So since being on TRF, I have had 3 watches that stayed for a while and 3 that came and went quickly. The Seven years before that, I was also about 50-50 in keeping watches a year or longer Watches that stayed a year or longer - DSSD, TT Bluesy (twice), Sub C Watches that came and went fast - Omega speed master, Hublot Big Bang, Exp II. Anyway thanks for the feedback Quote:
But I can't say I really loved them. I jumped in a little too quick last Fall thinking I wanted a YG Sub, finding it did not look right on me so I got the WG Sub. What I should have done is held off and researched more and not rushed into it. Same with the SS Daytona, AD pulled from a drawer and said what he got in. I knew these watches held their value and I did and do like it, but it was also an impulse buy. These last two I took more time and travelled to more Ads for Rolex, AP and PP. Really researched and made sure this time. But thanks Quote:
I agree with Hublot, that was a mistake. Though I applaud them for creating their own in house movements now. The Big bang I got had an ETA. This was my pre-WIS years of ignorance…LOL And I agree with Anthracite being the best looking (and also very comfortable) ROO. And 5167R really is something in the flesh, as its the ROO! Quote:
The Parmigiani Pershing you referenced is nice but just doesn't move me. The Piaget Polo really rubs me the wrong way. No offense to those who like it, but its like fingernails on a chalkboard looking at it. Armin Strom dials too busy for me, at least the ones I was looking at. ALSO looked at these brands below… I appreciate the horology in many of these and aforementioned watches, just for some reason, I cannot get EXCITED about any of them. Either too dressy, too busy, strangely shaped bezel/case or just overall not aesthetically pleasing enough. And I am referring to watches that are under $50,000. Some of these companies have spectacular watches that are just too much. A Lange & Sohne - cannot say anything bad about these amazing watches, just too dressy for my tastes. Tremendous respect. If I wanted a dress watch, would consider vs PP. Arnold and Son -just not for me Bovet Sportster, not for me Breguet Type X's - not bad, didn't move me. Breitling - has a couple a kinda like, considered a couple on rubber Bremont sports watches, not really my cup of tea design-wise. Cartier - not my style, but they had a couple sporty rubber I kinda liked. Chopard - Some not bad, but just not my style. Corum - Design doesn't work for me in general. I guess 12 sides is too many on a watch for my taste. Daniel Roth - Seriously considered a couple of his. Resect Ebel - not for me Franck Muller - For a watch with a shape like this, I would get RM. But i appreciate the horology here. Glasshutte - too dressy Graham - don't care for crown protector design Gucci - Looked at automatic. Not terrible. Hublot - been there done that Jaquet Droz sports watch collection- not bad, just not for me. JLC - Kinda like the Master Compressor, but not enough. Omega - just not on pair with Rolex IMHO. Had two already, don't plan on going back Oris - too plain Panerai - Too big and not my taste Perrelet - Cool engineering on turbines, but just don't dig the overall aesthetics. Roger Dubuis - Had a couple I seriously considered Tag Heuer - not for me at all Ulysse Nardin - Just doesn't do it for me. Some aren't bad Urwerk - just don't get it. Appreciate the horology but design not for me. Zenith - some nice pieces, but doesn't excite me Anyway, I have spent a lot of time looking at many brands, though I will admit, most of my time has been looking at Rolex, PP, AP and RM. Its not out of the question that I will get a brand outside these 4, but currently nothing else is exciting me. But thank you for the suggestions, I am always open to looking at new watches and learning about new references ----- More replies coming, just needed to break it up... |

Thanks Roger, your RM pics may be the end of me …LOL
Love all the watches you have and share here on TRF.. Just amazing Quote:
had a chance to try many of the others I have seen here on TRF. I like the RG, but too heavy on my wrist and honestly like the aesthetics of the Anthracite. My rose gold craving is satisfied nicely with the 5167R and its very comfortable too!! I suspect you are correct, its more a matter of when than if. I love Rolex, but I am currently Rolexed out. LOL… For the moment… Still on the list for a Daytona C, so I guess we'll SEE/C.. Thanks! Thanks! Quote:

better the look AND comfort AND scratch resistance of Anthracite. Quote:
I have had two cars for 6 years now, 4 911s and 5 BMW X5M/X5s. Thought I could do one car and got a panamera but then ended up back with a 911 and X5M. I guess I really need and love the variety. Now, TWO watches, possibly. As long as I have some variety that covers my range of working out to dress casual. These two from what I can tell cover all the bases... I might put the Anthracite to the test with working out, beach, and activities. Thanks! Quote:
Quote:
For the first time, I lost sleep over upcoming arrivals and have genuine excitement about the incomings. I feel really good about the move, even though I have been Flipper the dolphin this past year…LOL (remember that show.haha). Quote:
Thanks for the feedback, I put a fair amount of time into this post and really got me to reflect on my 8 years of collecting. Quote:
Thanks Mike! Thanks Alex, I agree |

Well played. I considated my pieces with very similar thinking. My AP and PP and Sub suit me just fine. Think you will agree too.

I think you made a great decision. I also don't feel guilty about flipping to move up the horological ladder. I LOVE the 5167R. I really like how the dial is a dark metallic brown.

The PanoMatics, as you’ve pointed out, do lean more towards the dressier side of things – but still stonkingly good and superb value for the money. Quote:

Just don’t put a Reverso in front of me, especially if I’ve a hammer in my hand! Quote:
Can’t abide the way they’ve whored out the Speedmaster with bogus Anniversary, and Limited Editions of umpteen thousand (as well as doing similar with other models). Limited, my arse! Quote:

Not taken by the Turbines, which I think they’ve milked for all it’s worth, and are in danger of doing an AP, and becoming a one or two range brand, effectively. Quote:

A number of dial designs really look the business, but yet I have absolutely no compunction for not getting one. Quote:

How do you feel about De Bethune? Not all are 46-48mm idiocies. |

Forgot that I owned a Hublot classic fusion briefly before trading for Big Bang. They do have some NEW fusions that are looking better. But still can't seem to warm up to Hublot. There are probably several sport references in many of these brands (and others) that I still need to see in person and look into more. Regarding your new recommendations - Not sure about the De Bethune. Just a little too out there for my tastes... At least what I am seeing. Not really that familiar with the brand. BUT - That Moser pioneer on rubber I am digging though ... My favorite of the recommendations you have sent. Local jeweler is an authorized Moser dealer, I'll see if they are getting any in (for curiosity). Otherwise, I remember looking at Moser and not seeing anything that really moved me. For now, I am sticking to my guns... AP , PP, Rolex and RM |

The surprise for me was really liking the look of the Anthracite over the 44rg. I figured it would be more comfortable and of course scratch proof having ceramic case and bezel, but in person this is a stunner!! |

Good to see one of the models I’ve mentioned has resonated with you – but if you’re not careful, you might find yourself gravitating towards the much more expensive Perpetual Calendar version! I’m surprised you feel the De Bethune is a bit too out there, especially the DB28GS – with its 6 day PR. If you’re willing to consider something more down market, then have a look at the Eterna Royal Kontiki Chronograph, and one that may need to be a buy before you try option, is the (long since defunct) Wyler Code R Chronograph. Can’t believe I forgot this one – Glashutte Original Sport Evo (discontinued these past 3 years, iirc)! And I presume Linde Werdelin is out of contention due to the 46mm case and similarity with the GP Chrono Hawk? One last one, which may not technically fit the sport description, but I think it looks just too unique to ignore, and that’s the Pierre DeRoche Royal Retro. Oh, no…there’s still one more that may tempt you away from your “guns” – Lehmann |

^^ Thanks Thomas, AP didn't stick, just too big and uncomfortable on my wrist.
It's a shame, because I love the way it looks. Leaning 5712 for next one, and AP probably after that (RO, not a ROO) |

Did you give it some time to get used to it? Sometimes when I get a new style of watch, like when I got my AP, at the time I was wearing almost only a 5712 and sure it felt huge at first, but after a few days it was fine. It's too bad but that's life, you should definitely consider the 5712, awesome watch, really comfy, and makes a great duo with your 5167R, like I said I will have the AP, 5712 and 5167R, and I have 2 other watches ordered but they will be in 2017, so I am aiming for a 5 piece collection, hope all of them will stick, for me 5 is the max and 3 is the minimum, though when I had the 5712 and the AP I was quite happy, but I wanted a third, so once October I will have 3 for some time and should be quite happy like that, I think you should be fine with a 5712, won't tell you to get a ceramic diver as it's not far in size from the 44's, but having a ceramic watch is kinda cool, almost no risk of it getting scratched, ok mine cracked for no reason but the AP service was great, it's waiting for me in Paris. Good luck on your choice but can tell you if you love the 5167R you should love the 5712 |
