Great choice. I'm considering a PF also as its all about what's on the wrist and to me they are the pinnacle of watches. I love your 2 choices. Congrats

I am in agreement with you Arnaud. Has taken me some time for this to sink in.
From now on I am only focusing on quality and what I really want the most (within my budget).
Feeling a small super high quality 3-4 piece collection will be my equilibrium point, even if models come and go.

Thanks Russ, I have been feeling this for a couple months now. Though adding Pepsi and RG YM would balance things, but after much
thought and research, I decided to do a redo and change things up.

Hey Felix, LOL, I have a GOOD feeling these two will be sticking around until AT LEAST Basel 2017.
I think I am finding my inner horological voice and DNA, so moving forward I don't suspect I'll be flipping so quickly anymore.
I am finally getting better with cars, have had my 911 GTS almost a year and a half, and my X5M a year (which is good for me).
And its not as bad as it seems. The RG YM was a return to AD the next day, all stickers remained on and the extent of my wearing it
was for taking pictures. The PEPSI reference is going because honestly its a bit too flimsy for me, the power reserve is too short and it
doesn't live up to the SubCs and Ceramic Rolexes I have had. Plus I think there were issues in the one I got, so nothing against this vintage watch.
My WG Sub, lasted 10 months, my SS Daytona, 9 months and my SS Sub (before the Pepsi), I had for TWO years.
The 5711 last year was sold because of IRS issues and needing the money.
So since being on TRF, I have had 3 watches that stayed for a while and 3 that came and went quickly.
The Seven years before that, I was also about 50-50 in keeping watches a year or longer
Watches that stayed a year or longer - DSSD, TT Bluesy (twice), Sub C
Watches that came and went fast - Omega speed master, Hublot Big Bang, Exp II.
Anyway thanks for the feedback

I agree completely with your logic of focusing on the watches you wanna wear, rather than balancing a collection with pieces you don't necessarily love. Well done !
Thanks, and I agree. Truth is i liked the WG Sub, SS Daytona and SS Sub. Pepsi not so much , but because vintage and had issues from the get-go.
But I can't say I really loved them. I jumped in a little too quick last Fall thinking I wanted a YG Sub, finding it did not look right on me so I got the WG Sub.
What I should have done is held off and researched more and not rushed into it.
Same with the SS Daytona, AD pulled from a drawer and said what he got in. I knew these watches held their value and I did and do like it, but it was also
an impulse buy.

These last two I took more time and travelled to more Ads for Rolex, AP and PP. Really researched and made sure this time.
But thanks

Wear in good health and my guess is that you'll add a SS piece sooner than later
Thanks Mike
I agree with Hublot, that was a mistake. Though I applaud them for creating their own in house movements now. The Big bang I got had an ETA.
This was my pre-WIS years of ignorance…LOL
And I agree with Anthracite being the best looking (and also very comfortable) ROO. And 5167R really is something in the flesh, as its the ROO!

Take a serious and proper look at the likes of Girard Perregaux's Chrono Hawk, Parmigiani Pershing and Tonda, Vacheron Constantin Overseas, Bvlgari Octo, Piaget Polo, Armin Strom... I could go on, but you get the picture.
Thanks for the advice, but I have spent some time in other brands, and considered seriously the following BP FF (rose gold on strap), VC OS, IWC Ingenieur, and speedy dark side of the moon. Really don't care for Girard Perregaux bezel shape and overall design of their sport watches. Same goes for Bvlgari
The Parmigiani Pershing you referenced is nice but just doesn't move me. The Piaget Polo really rubs me the wrong way. No offense to those who like it, but its like fingernails on a chalkboard looking at it. Armin Strom dials too busy for me, at least the ones I was looking at.

ALSO looked at these brands below… I appreciate the horology in many of these and aforementioned watches, just for some
reason, I cannot get EXCITED about any of them. Either too dressy, too busy, strangely shaped bezel/case or just overall not aesthetically pleasing enough.
And I am referring to watches that are under $50,000. Some of these companies have spectacular watches that are just too much.

A Lange & Sohne - cannot say anything bad about these amazing watches, just too dressy for my tastes.
Tremendous respect. If I wanted a dress watch, would consider vs PP.
Arnold and Son -just not for me
Bovet Sportster, not for me
Breguet Type X's - not bad, didn't move me.
Breitling - has a couple a kinda like, considered a couple on rubber
Bremont sports watches, not really my cup of tea design-wise.
Cartier - not my style, but they had a couple sporty rubber I kinda liked.
Chopard - Some not bad, but just not my style.
Corum - Design doesn't work for me in general. I guess 12 sides is too many on a watch for my taste.
Daniel Roth - Seriously considered a couple of his. Resect
Ebel - not for me
Franck Muller - For a watch with a shape like this, I would get RM. But i appreciate the horology here.
Glasshutte - too dressy
Graham - don't care for crown protector design
Gucci - Looked at automatic. Not terrible.
Hublot - been there done that
Jaquet Droz sports watch collection- not bad, just not for me.
JLC - Kinda like the Master Compressor, but not enough.
Omega - just not on pair with Rolex IMHO. Had two already, don't plan on going back
Oris - too plain
Panerai - Too big and not my taste
Perrelet - Cool engineering on turbines, but just don't dig the overall aesthetics.
Roger Dubuis - Had a couple I seriously considered
Tag Heuer - not for me at all
Ulysse Nardin - Just doesn't do it for me. Some aren't bad
Urwerk - just don't get it. Appreciate the horology but design not for me.
Zenith - some nice pieces, but doesn't excite me

Anyway, I have spent a lot of time looking at many brands, though I will admit, most of my time has been looking at Rolex, PP, AP and RM.

Its not out of the question that I will get a brand outside these 4, but currently nothing else is exciting me.

But thank you for the suggestions, I am always open to looking at new watches and learning about new references

By the way the 44 Anthracite is my favorite of the 44's too and that includes the RG which I had and swapped for the Ceramic.
Thanks Ken, your pictures really helped, but seeing it in person sealed the deal. And AD really had a nice selection of ROOs, so I
had a chance to try many of the others I have seen here on TRF. I like the RG, but too heavy on my wrist and honestly like the aesthetics of the Anthracite.
My rose gold craving is satisfied nicely with the 5167R and its very comfortable too!!

I suspect you are correct, its more a matter of when than if. I love Rolex, but I am currently Rolexed out. LOL…
For the moment…
Still on the list for a Daytona C, so I guess we'll SEE/C..

Thanks Neil! I agree with you on that… 5712 might still find its way in when more funds are available. 44rg is out for me. Love the look, but I like even
better the look AND comfort AND scratch resistance of Anthracite.

I don't think so, I would not bring the RG aquanaut to to gym or beach. Anthracite being scratch proof will get PLENTY of wrist time! Plus its a totally different look that I love.
I have had two cars for 6 years now, 4 911s and 5 BMW X5M/X5s. Thought I could do one car and got a panamera but then ended up back with a 911 and X5M.
I guess I really need and love the variety.
Now, TWO watches, possibly. As long as I have some variety that covers my range of working out to dress casual. These two from what I can tell cover all the bases... I might put the Anthracite to the test with working out, beach, and activities.

Thanks Tom, I have a feeling these two will stick around longer than average!
For the first time, I lost sleep over upcoming arrivals and have genuine excitement about the incomings.
I feel really good about the move, even though I have been Flipper the dolphin this past year…LOL (remember that show.haha).

I think you made a great decision. I also don't feel guilty about flipping to move up the horological ladder. I LOVE the 5167R. I really like how the dial is a dark metallic brown.

GP has quite a few I’ve grown fond of:
Chrono Hawk (no surprise there)
Laureato, both new Ltd Edition version, and the discontinued Evo 3 (big date & moonphase).

A shame, as I think Bvlgari’s in-house design team have done a stunning job on the Octo version they created from Gerald Genta’s original design, under his own brand.

Fair enough. What about the Tonda Metrographe?

Yet to see in the metal, but the images have made it seem very appealing.

I thought it may’ve been a bit of a stretch, but there are certain elements (no pun intended) that have drawn me in.

A real pity – love the Perpetual Moon and Bridge Wheel especially.

Bovet Sportster, not for me
It’s alright, but there are some others that are a tad tasty and different from the norm.

Likewise.

Quote:
Breitling - has a couple a kinda like, considered a couple on rubber
A brand that I’ve never taken to.

Apart from the white Solo, and maybe the Supermarine 500, that’s all they have to entice me.

Santos 100XL, and that’s it.

Chopard - Some not bad, but just not my style.
Some of the LUCs only – the regular stuff is far too cheesy.

Quote:
Corum - Design doesn't work for me in general. I guess 12 sides is too many on a

Rubbish….a man can never have enough sides to stimulate his visual system and cutaneous mechanoreceptors.

Quote:
Daniel Roth - Seriously considered a couple of his. Respect
Chronosprint! Big bastard, but even so.

Quote:
Ebel - not for me
Don’t think I’ve seen one that has been compelling enough to give it a go.

Franck Muller - For a watch with a shape like this, I would get RM. But i appreciate the horology here.
Neither marques mentioned do the slightest thing for me, with only the slim RM getting registering more than the usual disinterested “meh”.

Quote:
Glasshutte - too dressy
Whilst not quite Aquanaut sporty, the Seventies is an absolute peach of a design.
The PanoMatics, as you’ve pointed out, do lean more towards the dressier side of things – but still stonkingly good and superb value for the money.

Quote:
Graham - don't care for crown protector design
Gucci - Looked at automatic. Not terrible.
Moving quickly on...

Quote:
Hublot - been there done that
Classic Fusion and the forthcoming Meca-10 do it for me – the BBs I can happily forget about.

Quote:
JLC - Kinda like the Master Compressor, but not enough.
Hate the crowns on the Comp, but perversely, do find a lot to admire about the Extreme LAB 2.
Just don’t put a Reverso in front of me, especially if I’ve a hammer in my hand!

Quote:
Omega - just not on pair with Rolex IMHO. Had two already, don't plan on going back
Oris - too plain
Never had one – can’t say I feel I’ve missed anything.
Can’t abide the way they’ve whored out the Speedmaster with bogus Anniversary, and Limited Editions of umpteen thousand (as well as doing similar with other models).
Limited, my arse!

Quote:
Panerai - Too big and not my taste
Not a problem for my 8¼” wrist, but as they all look crap, it’s purely academical.

Quote:
Perrelet - Cool engineering on turbines, but just don't dig the overall aesthetics.
Love my lowly Seacraft, with its GO-style ratchet diver extension – I wonder if Swatch had a quiet word with them, and that’s why the range was discontinued only 3 years into production.
Not taken by the Turbines, which I think they’ve milked for all it’s worth, and are in danger of doing an AP, and becoming a one or two range brand, effectively.

Quote:
Roger Dubuis - Had a couple I seriously considered
Excaliber and La Monegasque – now you’re talking!

Quote:
Tag Heuer - not for me at all
They’re an oddity for me.
A number of dial designs really look the business, but yet I have absolutely no compunction for not getting one.

Quote:
Ulysse Nardin - Just doesn't do it for me. Some aren't bad
Maxi Marine Diver – lume that’ll burn the retinas from your eyeballs, even with just a quick glance.
El Toro – just love it, and that zany Freak too.

Quote:
Urwerk - just don't get it. Appreciate the horology but design not for me.
Recoiled in horror at first, but in time, I’ve grown to quite like a few of them.

Zenith - some nice pieces, but doesn't excite me
Snap!

I’m not sure I’d fully go along with the notion of it being a sports watch, but nonetheless, you might take a look at the new Moser Pioneer – when it finally becomes a reality, later this year….apparently.
How do you feel about De Bethune? Not all are 46-48mm idiocies.

I left out the responses because it is a long post, but I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to write these detailed replies...

Forgot that I owned a Hublot classic fusion briefly before trading for Big Bang. They do have some NEW fusions that are looking better. But still can't seem to warm up to Hublot.

There are probably several sport references in many of these brands (and others) that I still need to see in person and look into more.

Regarding your new recommendations - Not sure about the De Bethune. Just a little too out there for my tastes... At least what I am seeing. Not really that familiar with the brand.
BUT - That Moser pioneer on rubber I am digging though ... My favorite of the recommendations you have sent.
Local jeweler is an authorized Moser dealer, I'll see if they are getting any in (for curiosity). Otherwise, I remember looking at Moser and not seeing
anything that really moved me.

For now, I am sticking to my guns... AP , PP, Rolex and RM

Thanks Martin, actually was kinda leaning that way until I saw them all in person and tried them on. 44rg too heavy, and 5167 great, but love rose gold more so.
The surprise for me was really liking the look of the Anthracite over the 44rg.
I figured it would be more comfortable and of course scratch proof having ceramic case and bezel, but in person this is a stunner!!

Yeah, it is fractionally on the long side…
Good to see one of the models I’ve mentioned has resonated with you – but if you’re not careful, you might find yourself gravitating towards the much more expensive Perpetual Calendar version!

I’m surprised you feel the De Bethune is a bit too out there, especially the DB28GS – with its 6 day PR.

If you’re willing to consider something more down market, then have a look at the Eterna Royal Kontiki Chronograph, and one that may need to be a buy before you try option, is the (long since defunct) Wyler Code R Chronograph.
Can’t believe I forgot this one – Glashutte Original Sport Evo (discontinued these past 3 years, iirc)!
And I presume Linde Werdelin is out of contention due to the 46mm case and similarity with the GP Chrono Hawk?
One last one, which may not technically fit the sport description, but I think it looks just too unique to ignore, and that’s the Pierre DeRoche Royal Retro.
Oh, no…there’s still one more that may tempt you away from your “guns” – Lehmann

After much thought and reflection, countless hours on this forum, reading and watching reviews, etc...
AND having fun shopping at a couple ADs for Rolex, AP and PP,
I have decided to cash in my "All Rolex" collection for something new, something fresh. Something unexpected.

Past 8 years journey
Over the past 8 years, I have owned 9 Rolexes - 2 SS Subs, 2 TT Subs, a WG Sub, SS Daytona, Pepsi, DSSD, and a Exp II.
RG YM didn't stay long enough to count. Though you could say 10.

I still love Rolex, but I am desiring something new and fresh. Honestly, I have not been excited with my Rolexes as of late, not because I dislike Rolex, no far from it...
Its because I have been a Rolex company man for 8 years, not deviating except for 2 Omegas and a Hublot (all very short lived).

After all this I have realized a couple things
1) I don't like heavy, PM watches with PM bracelets... I like the way they look, just not how they feel on my small, awkward shaped wrists.
2) I will probably never get WG anything again.
Nobody seemed to even know I was wearing gold save the few rare WIS I bump into and meet in the wild.
(I guess the whole "stealth wealth" concept isn't for me).
3) The Sub is my favorite Rolex design followed closely by Daytona.
So down the road, very probable one of these Rolexes will come back to my collection.
4) I am not going to focus on building a collection of balanced pieces anymore.
No more thoughts like GMT, Chrono, Diver and dress. Balancing brands, colors, etc.
In fact, I am not really interested in watch "collecting". I am interested in watch "wearing".
I am just going to buy watches I really WANT to wear, look forward to wearing. and that get me excited.
As soon as they don't, I will flip them for something that does excite me.
5) I want only exceptional watches for all occasions, even going to the gym and the beach.
6) I am not into fluted bezels or traditional dress watches... the dressiest watch I would probably ever get is a 5711-1r or 5712r on a strap.
7) At this point, only 4 brands interest me - Rolex, AP, PP and RM. And only sports models. RM is down the road, not anytime soon.
8) I will probably trade and flip my watches often, just as I do my cars. I accept that about myself and will feel no guilt any longer.
Right now two watches feels right though I can see myself adding a SS bracelet watch that is comfortable later this year (like 5711/5712).
I have been wearing SS/PM bracelets nonstop for 8 years so I have no problem having two rubber strap watches now.

NEW Collection starting this Tuesday
SO, my collection is going from a WG Sub, SS Daytona, and Pepsi to:

1) PP 5167R
2) AP 26405CE (Ceramic anthracite)

I tried on most PP Aquanaut and Nautilus versions and Most AP RO and ROO models at ADs.
These are the two that together really moved me emotionally and also were very comfortable to wear.
One will work for dress (amazing how good the 5167r looks on rubber), and the AP for even more occasions as I will probably workout with it even.

The toughest choices boiled down to AP 44rg vs Ceramic anthracite and PP 5712-1a vs 5167r.
I knew I wanted actual gold on my watch, so 5167r and AP 44rg were the two finalists.
Once I wore the AP44rg and felt its heft compared to the comfort of the 5167r and AP CE, the AP CE fell into place.
Plus looking in the mirror, on me, I actually like the way it looks better (that surprised me).

Ultimately I LOVE the look and comfort of my final two choices...

So let me introduce you to my new 2 piece collection

p.s. Had a hard time deciding which forum to post this in...
I didn't want to post in the Rolex forum, because it's a new beginning for me, and I no longer have rolexes.
I decided here, only because I have been a bit more active here than the AP forum.
Saw the Patek dock incoming...Love the AP - Congrats!

^^ Thanks Thomas, AP didn't stick, just too big and uncomfortable on my wrist.
It's a shame, because I love the way it looks.
Leaning 5712 for next one, and AP probably after that (RO, not a ROO)

WOW, you flipped the AP??? That's too bad, I have the CE diver and it's very comfy, maybe not as much as a 5712 or 5167 but much more than any Rolex sub c or GMT c, it's very light and comfy.

Did you give it some time to get used to it? Sometimes when I get a new style of watch, like when I got my AP, at the time I was wearing almost only a 5712 and sure it felt huge at first, but after a few days it was fine.

It's too bad but that's life, you should definitely consider the 5712, awesome watch, really comfy, and makes a great duo with your 5167R, like I said I will have the AP, 5712 and 5167R, and I have 2 other watches ordered but they will be in 2017, so I am aiming for a 5 piece collection, hope all of them will stick, for me 5 is the max and 3 is the minimum, though when I had the 5712 and the AP I was quite happy, but I wanted a third, so once October I will have 3 for some time and should be quite happy like that, I think you should be fine with a 5712, won't tell you to get a ceramic diver as it's not far in size from the 44's, but having a ceramic watch is kinda cool, almost no risk of it getting scratched, ok mine cracked for no reason but the AP service was great, it's waiting for me in Paris.

Good luck on your choice but can tell you if you love the 5167R you should love the 5712
