I don't like the ones of the SubC; the ones on the 116710LN seems to be smaller (maybe will try one at AD at some time), so far my favorite is still the 5 series.

Interesting.

I don't think the maxi case is dainty in the least.

I feel they are quite a bit "tougher". However, while they look tougher, im not sure they are for me.

I like the proportions if the 5 digit or the newer, non maxi, cases. Fir me, it's just a better fit.

That's not to say I don't like them. Debating a 114060 even now. But overall, I think the smaller cases are more proportional.

For me 114060<14060 but DJ<DJ41<DJII. So it depends on the models involved.

I'm with Larry. Although I do own a 116600 and hope to add a 116500 when I'm deemed worthy by the AD

The sub just looks funny to me after wearing the 116600. Not sure I'll be able to go back.

I was extremely pleased when I saw the DD40 adjustments as well and hope they go back to thinner lugs across the board.

I disliked the maxicase until I acquired the BLNR and LVc. The wider lugs and crown guards are not as bad as what most people make them out to be. Watch on wrist. Its not out of proportion at all - well at least to me.

I prefer the better bracelets and the larger crowns of the 6 digit models. I think Rolex finally caught up to my vintage (or not quite yet vintage) 1998 omega sea master in these areas. I chose the Omega over a sub back then (not knowing all I know now) largely because the Omega felt more solid. It still is great, wearing it now.

Can't beat vintage unless it's with a 114060. Yep it's that good!

In pics, the larger lugs on the Subc look more pronounced
But on the wrist, they look fine to me even compared with the DSSD lugs which taper the most in width relative to the rest of the case amongst the divers

I don't even like the newer bracelets and clasps, despite being technically better, because they're heavier. When trying it on, I was really surprised how much bulkier and heavier the SubC is compared to the outgoing model.

Mechanical watches are essentially an anachronism, so I'm not really interesting in technical advances and improvements.

I didn't like them at first but they grew on me. I have a modest collection and 2 of my 3 are 6 digit references and 1 is a 5 digit.

Has ruined the Rolex Submariner for me. I look forward to the day the maxi case is replaced.

i agree with you and other old school enthusiasts. we have a maxi two tone sub ceramic that my wife loves but i find way too heavy and clunky for my tastes and more of a fashion statement. very uncomfortable on my wrist and my wife who is quite petite seems to put up with it as she likes the look.

i can't stand the added weight of solid links, head links and the glide lock as well. all overkill as the traditional folding clasp and hollow links/end links have already proven themselves for over 50 years and i feel rolex merely caved in to the competitions' offerings of lumbering and clumsy bracelets. my favorite rolexes are plastic crystal with holes and as far as i'm concerned those will hold their long term value much better than any sapphire model. much more wearable as well. people following this trendy "bigger is better" stuff from watch producers suffer wearing anchors on their wrists while extolling the virtues of the useless mass as if it will somehow make the watch more sturdy. does anyone here know how the ceramic bezels are attached to these new watches? plastic my friends. how about these "stronger" solid head links bracelet to head link attachment? a non-serviceable blind spring bar that is already prone to breaking trying to support the girth of these swollen cased offerings.

I like the non maxi case, but I do like the ceramic bezel. The maxi case looks to big and thick looking on my arms. Looks like I'm wearing my dads watch when I was a kid. I feel it depends on the person wearing it, bigger person will look better with the thicker case .

I prefer the 5 digit sub/seadweller cases, but I like the ceramic bezels, new dials and bracelets. Of the new models, the SD4000 looks great but I could never buy a maxicase sub, I have tried a few times and I just cannot get past those lugs.

I now have a BLNR which has a slightly smaller case, and (for me) given that its not a sub or seadweller, I can put up with it. I also don't understand the concept that they made the lugs fatter so they could survive more polishing. The new Daytona/airking/explorer don't have the oversized lugs.

Here's looking forward to the day when Rolex reverts back to the more elegant lug design...

I prefer the larger cases. But equally as important to me is the maxi-dial, glidelock clasp, SELs, AR-coated Cyclops, cerachrom insert and the lume colour.

A larger case on its own would still be enough, though. I like the resulting wrist presence.

Prefer the maxi case, you can polish it 20 times before it shows

i think it's pretty obvious that the set of watches below are much closer in design and spirit to the 114060/116610 than the 14060/16610.

note how the lugs protrude from the bracelet and serve to frame the dial & bezel, just like the modern divers.

Five digits for Subs and SD. With 36mm models I love both. I love fliplock and glidelock but this one not sure will last in time and use as the fliplock does.

There are things I like in all generations of the line but I have become more partial to the newer maxi cases.
Every time I think of getting a 4 or 5 digit reference, something from the modern era takes it's place.

I think even Rolex has mixed feelings about this. For example, the 42mm Explorer II is obviously larger by 2mm, but the case itself doesn't have the same supercase proportions as the Submariner or GMT-Master II. The lugs aren't as wide relative to the rest of the design. The same is true for the Milgauss and Yachtmaster. While there are slight proportion changes and an overall widening of the case in some dimension, both lack the obvious lug thickness that the 116710 and the 114060/116610 have.

With Rolex slimming down both the Day-Date and the Datejust, I think the only models that really fit into the supercase camp are the aforementioned ones. This is likely because these are the most popular models and Rolex wants to present a design that remains 40mm but still wears a little larger like most of their competition. I don't see this going away as these models continue to sell.

Me personally, I see pros and cons to both.

I don't see it. The cases on all of these are much closer to the 14060/16610. Just the end links on the first three give the impression of a slightly 'cushion shaped' case. The Comex has absolutely nothing similar to the SubC about it.
