Probably sitting on a load of 36mm DDs that they are looking to pump and dump.

Hodinkee has always been classic "older" model fans. Very few are Modern fans. Are you surprised they prefer 36mm. As stated above they are prob sitting on a bunch of 36 PM DD and looking to move them.

I got to try on this exact model at an AD not too long ago. What a great watch. Everything about it was perfect for me, as I have an 8" wrist. Where's the 36mmm seemed slightly small, the DDII was spot on.

There are no losers in this comparison. Once a watch is on your wrist for a few weeks your brain is totally accustomed to it. I enjoy my 36 DD but i would not knock back a 40mm either, but the cost difference is just too great given I buy used not new.

I'd take a DD40 over a 36 all day long. Perfect size/feel and improved movement. The 36 is of course a classic but 36 on a 7.5 " wrist is too small compared to the 40. The 40 is truly the best of all the DD's IMHO.

For 12g's you must be referring to the 18238 and not the 118238 I believe. The cheapest 118238 I have seen goes for 13.5

I read the article and thought from the beginning that the author was locked in on the 36mm. Both are great watches but if you dropped his account of being a young man and seeing the 36 mm DD very little to separate the two watches. I don't think he gave the 40 mm its due. I believe the size of a DD that someone likes has a lot to do with personal preference but also wrist size. You can wear what you want but what looks the best is what fits.

Perhaps the original DD will be updated next year with the new movement and new bracelet.

Then I would strongly consider it over the dd40 I have next up on my list but until then I am totally into the the dd40.

Hope Rolex adds a ruby dial option next year, always loved that on the 36 and DD2.

I have very small wrists so my Sub C looks a little big whereas my 36mm DJ fits perfectly.

If I were ever lucky enough to buy a DD it would be the 36mm without hesitation.

I love this classic on others but it just does not look good on me. I prefer SS, WG, or platinum.

Great, very well-written article. Thanks for posting the link.

This is exactly my situation. The 36mm DD looks just fine on my smaller wrist. It looks like a dress watch.

The Sub C is on the large side and is great for daily casual wear even with my wrist.

I'm seriously contemplating trading my SS daytona for a 18238 champagne dial.

If I would afford a DD40 I'd pick that instead.

Thanks for sharing.
36mm Rolex is classic size, cause I think the majority of watches that Rolex makes is 36mm.
I recently found new love going the opposite, from 44, 42, 40, 39 back to 36.

40 looks to be the best fit, proportionately. Personally, anything bigger than 40 just looks goofy IMO...unless you have big wrists....44mm (DSSD)....I literally laughed when I tried it on....it's a beast of a watch but man....entirely too big and I don't have small wrists at all.

Agree 100%- I have several 36MM Rolex' in my possession and when you have them side by side the 40 wins with me hands down.
The new movement, ceramic bracelet inserts, and a few more facets added to the bezel make it an awesome piece.

The 36mm size is oft derided for being too small, but when it is a yellow gold day-date on president it is just the right size for business and personal situations. It is hard to dislike any gold rolex though.

The 40mm is a nice modern take on a classic. Classic anything will take some beating to be fair.

Do all of the DD40 models have the ceramic bracelet inserts, or just the platinum models?
