Call me the second. Tag makes great watches for the money, have owned a few in the past and will again.

When I first started looking at higher end watches, I purchased an omega seamaster. I wore the watch for a week and then took it back and traded for a 14060m and have not looked back. Are there times I wish I had the date? Yeah, but I've never needed the date and not have some other means of finding it out. Sub is my vote between the two because of the history and "beef" of the watch compared to the explorer. The explorer reminds me a lot of the Swiss army watch I had years ago. Which for some is the lure, but not for me.

I'll go against the grain and say try them both on your wrist before making a decision. I found the Sub C to bulky and to heavy for my tastes. I'd go with the Explorer if it were me.

I've owned the explorer and while I really, REALLY like it, I switched to a sea dweller because I like the styling of a dive watch and the date function. Since switching I've not gone back to my explorer.
In fact it's currently for sale because I just can't justify owning a watch I'm not wearing. If it had a date window it might be the perfect watch. The only reason I'd go for the sub over the explorer is because I'd prefer the sub date. Since you're looking at two no date models I'd go for the explorer 100 times out of 100. Unless you really want to look like that English fellow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I just went through an identical situation...own a Tag Aquaracer and decided to move forward with the Sub C Date.
The other members are correct in stating that Tags don't hold their value. Rather than trade in/sell, I put the Aquaracer on a NATO strap and use it as my beater/tool watch when not wearing my Sub. I actually like the Aquaracer more now with the strap than in the 3 years on wore it daily! Can't go wrong with the Sub! |

The Sub is a beautiful watch in its own right, but I prefer the variety afforded by having the Tag and the Explorer depending on the situation.
For reference, I have a modified Seiko SKX009, and I just purchased my 39mm Explorer from AU_911tt. It's coming in tomorrow (damn snow). I'm happy knowing i have some flexibility in situations where I don't want to wear a Rolex.

I would trade the Tag and get a Sub in your shoes. If it's your first and only Rolex, I'd strongly consider going with the Sub Date

If we're talking new, I'd go with the Sub, because I don't like the new Explorer. Used, it's a different story. A good old 114270 would get my vote.

I kept my Tag and added the SubC.. I still enjoy wearing my Tag. All of your options are nice.

I wouldn't get the Sub no date...save and get the Sub date. Better value and zero chance of buyer's regret. If money is burning a hole in your pocket then get the Explorer and make a sub date next on your list (maybe then you will consider a hulk, since you will already have a black dial Rolex.)

I would get the Sub C. But I love the explorer 2 as well. Can you get both. One then the other?

Thanks for all the responses! Seems most of you are in favour of the Submariner, very interesting.

One more upvote for the Sub: iconic, and the watch you are the least likely to ever regret. Plus, you can use the bezel for a date function, if that's really an issue.
