most people at the office do not even have watches, they do not care, they might know the Rolex brand but they could not tell one and would never bother to ask, this all includes my boss, i was asked once by a colleague and i said - quality swiss automatic
and i have exp which is inconspicuous anyway so it depends on the circumstances |

I would love to be at your appraisal meetings when she starts talking about the companies equality policies, your understanding of them and the progress you have made with them in the last year

No. I worked and earned the money to buy my watch. If I spend it on a watch that's my business.

But back to topic. I'd recommend you buy your boss a Rolex since then your boss would have a Rolex and your dilemma is gone. It worked for me and my wife is very happy with her new watch.

Surely those guys were jesting, wearing only your underpants? No wonder you did not get a good discount I am surprised they did not call the police. In the UK people normally wear trousers over there pants. The consequences of the no pants option does not bear thinking about

I only see my boss a couple of times a year and the last time I saw him he was wearing a fake Rolex and a really bad one at that although he could certainly afford one. Our company is going through a very tough period right now so I feel it puts me in a bit of a dilemma.

Yup just wear it front of my boss. Work for a $18 billion USD company, my boss makes a high 6 figure salary, incl bonuses most likely to be in the 7 figure bracket. I wore my Tag Heuer, Sub and Date during my meetings with him, he did notice and mentioned that i wear nice watches. However. although he can afford it, he only wears a rugged Tissot watch. I guess he is not into watches, owns a couple of BMW motors tho'.
Why would your boss or you, for that matter, feel uncomfortable, because you wear a slightly more expensive watch? To each their own right, he might spend a lot of money you don't really care about.

The way I see it, after every possible opinion has been registered, oh say five times, we ought to be able to start having fun with it. The OP is probably moved on and is now wondering if he can play golf with it on. |

I wish I could attribute this to trans-Atlantic miscommunications that we frequently experience here, but I have to plead guilty do knowing better. If you EVER said you were wearing pants instead of trousers in the Marines there was hell to pay. But wait, the "jacket" was a uniform "blouse." So confusing.

No. The type of watch I wear on any given day depends on my mood, and my boss is certainly aware of my interest in watches. Sometimes, I get comments like "which one have you got on today?". I tell him, and he says "why do you need more than 1 watch?" Gotta admit, I'm not sure of the answer myself...

No.
Many people are not necessarily attuned to what Rolex is, except that it is a reliable brand which works well. |

No, just because someone choose not to buy it doesn't mean they can't afford it. Everyone like something different in life....he might have a much bigger house, nice Yacht, and lots of cash

You might be happier if you skipped these types of threads

Not a bad strategy really. And it is always easy to skip a thread that offends you, right? |

In answer to the original post....
You need to rely on your observational skills. Get to know your boss and his/her preferences.
If he says: " in these troubled economic times I really appreciate people who still give to charity and don't blow their money on luxuries" might be a good idea to hide the watch..... If he/she has a hundred million dollars or so, and wears a Rolex G-Shock to work (my boss/partner of course has the deluxe solar powered G-Shock) and likes to make fun of your solid gold Rolex while driving down to his mansion at the ocean, go ahead and wear it, and tell him a joke or two about guys with oversized mansions..... as long as you are really, really good at your job. But by and large, no one, including your boss will ever notice what watch you wear. They'll notice your shoes, color of your shirt, or if you wear a suit the cut of your suit, and even your home address far before they will notice a watch. I've been wearing the "giant" Deepsea this week, and not a single person around me among our crews, partners, etc have noticed that I'm not wearing my gold Rolex, or that I'm wearing the "huge" watch that is making such a stir around here. No one cares. |

I'm the Booker around my place of employment, so no.
Jobbers do get jealous though... Workers don't really notice.
