I own Rolex, really like the brand as well as Panerai but the OP has a point Rolex AD are for the most part a group of pompass pin heads, they have luxury goods and act as though there shat doesn't stink!

Tell us something new ;) It's a game that retailers play. If they have items that are high in demand and next to zero supply, they'll do their best to maximise the items. It was no different when the first generation Mercedes SLK hit the market. The folks who couldn't wait would pay upwards of $10-20k above retail to be one of the first (in Aust). As annoying as it is, it's nothing new.

Check rolex in switzerland or Norway. Flights are cheap and you can get 8-20% tax refund.

No demeaning or snide comment, no demand for a non-refundable deposit, just a simple declarative that the AD is there for the potential customer. Even if it all comes to nought, the potential customer may all remember the dignity of the reply and favor the dealer with some future purchase.

I feel your frustration but limited supply creates this. If you work with cars you should be used to this. Try going in to a Porsche dealer for the first time and order a GT3or want to get in line for the upcoming GT3 RS.

There is a reason you want those particular watches and that is because they are desirable/hard to obtain, if they were ten-a-penny you would probably not be interested

I do wonder how much love these two watches would get if they were readily available

I agree with the OP. The grey market is only fueled by greedy AD's.

I have never had anything but first rate service from the Rolex dealers that I have dealt with over the past forty years. I have bought from dealers in Texas, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

I agree with the OP. Rolex has a marketing and supply system that in my opinion is dated and does not work well for the brand in the long run. I was big with Panerai in the late 90's and early 2000's but based on a similar marketing campaign I moved away. Supply and demand are important but with a more modern and sophisticated customer today than ever before you must be careful not to create issues. Rolex is king to me and always will be but for new or younger collectors who have not been hooked yet you may have an issue. I wonder if Rolex would just manufacture watches that supplied the demand, Daytona-C for example, in sufficient numbers would the brand not grow more than hiding behind the outdated concept of creating buzz because not very many can get the watch.

Makes me laugh.. There is no other brand with a longer story of success. They look much fare than some years!

Dissolution in the Rolex brand

Sometimes you can't always get what you want, when you want it, at a price you like.
Like Master's tickets at face value, or a new old stock 918 at MSRP...

X2

Which, at this point, is why I have no desire to buy from an AD.

Well, my AD is a really nice guy , who does his best. Don't take it all so personally, they are just mass produced watches in the end. Buy something else, because Rolex are far from the only company making fine watches. There is a big world out there....

Now you know why I only deal with DavidSW and not with any AD's. For me there is NO benefit to using AD's especially when they play the games your talking about. Its your money and you can decide on where you spend it and how much of a hassle you want to put up with. For me I like things simple.....

As stated above, it's the AD's supplying the grays, not Rolex directly. It is what it is, and no amount of complaining we do here on TRF is going to change this.

You are going to have to do some creative thinking to solve this one...some good suggestions contained in this thread. Good luck...and welcome!

You can always buy a different watch. I would like a Daytona C, do not see it happening soon.

Man, I should have gotten on that list 50 years ago, as maybe they'd nearly have my $300 Newman Daytona ready for me.
