Rolex Cosmograph Daytona versus Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

I've owned both, aesthetically the AP is a nicer looking and much nicer finished watch however I would never trust my AP jumping in a swimming pool for example - yet I wouldn't hesitate with the Daytona. Overall the longevity, reliability of the Daytona would make it my choice as overall the AP is just a little too 'high maintenance'....

The AP sub dials are offset.
The Offshore chrono is a module. That bothers some but Patek also use the same module on some models (Dubois Dupraz)
The RO Chrono movement isn't the best which is why it has a solid caseback.
The Offshore pushers can be used instantly to time things which is the point of a chronograph.
The RO chrono has to be unscrewed.
Offshore is a thick watch, that bothers some.
The servicing costs are (now) horrendous and sometimes AP farm out servicing to a third party.
Some find it difficult to carry off the size.
Offshore's are becoming more and more difficult to sell. They hang around the dealers for months.
Not ageing well because of all the different designs.
Still seen as a rappers watch.
Sunken date can be awkward to read.
Offshore does not have white gold hex bolts- they are steel
RO chrono does have white gold hex bolts.


The Daytona has an in house movement.
The dial is perfectly balanced.
You have to unscrew the crowns to use the chrono function.
The Daytona is beautifully slim.
Service costs are manageable.
Servicing is all done in house.
Everyone can carry off the size.
Still has the "ladies watch" stigma because so many celebrity women wear them.
Like all Rolex, is it's own currency and only steadily increasing in value.
Can sell it easily if you have to.
Totally ageless.
It is waterproof.
No need for a date function as the date is everywhere these days.
Very comfortable.

Up to you to weigh up the good and bad but I would go Daytona over AP chrono or Offshore any day of the week.

Those two watches are completely different IMO. I do own a RO which only gets wrist time on more formal/dressy occasions as the brushed steel makes it easier to spot scratches.

I would go for the DaytonaC if I am looking for a low key every day watch but would go with the AP ROC if I am looking for a watch that stands out in the crowd.

Its April 2018 now. Exactly a year after the last post.

I can get a White Ceramic Daytona for the same price of an AP ROC.
However due to the current crazy situation with Rolex now, the Daytona is $20k while the ROC is $21k. Sounds about the same, but the Daytona is $7.5k above its retail price while the ROC is $4.6k below its retail price.

I'm crazy about the Daytona but honestly does it make sense to buy a watch that is so much above its retail price rather than another that is way below its retail price. I know its mostly down to which watch sings to you most. But based on the economics of things? E.g. The Daytona can only go up while the Roc will go down eventually?

I think you'd be insane to take a Rolex Daytona over an AP ROC if they're the same price. Just my 2c.

and as a side note, perhaps you're looking at the economics of things in the wrong light. What if the Daytona is currently 'over'valued and the AP is currently 'under'valued. That means purchasing the AP is even more to your benefit.

Flat out, you're getting way more watch for your money out of the AP. However, with that being said, they are two completely different watches in my opinion. I wouldn't wear the ROC the same way I would wear the Daytona. The Daytona wears hard and you can beat it around, whereas the ROC is on a totally different level of polishing and detailing, a real looker. This is part of the reason it's more than double the MSRP of the Daytona. It's up to you, but you should also take this into consideration. I wouldn't want a ROC as my only watch if that's what you're considering.

I get what you mean.
Its just that the price of a Daytona goes up forever while a used ROC seems to only go downwards in terms of price. True that they are very different watch but it just feels good to know that you are wearing something awesome plus they are always appreciating..

I don't need to buy it now, but don't want to risk the likelihood that it will go above $20k in say 1-2 years from now.

IF history repeats itself — in 3-5 years the probability of finding a steel Daytona at an AD at retail will go up.

Same thing happened in mid 2000s when all the hype started to wear off....

Who knows for sure — but my bet is that stainless Daytona’s will not stay in the 20k realm for more than another couple of years.

I like the cal 4130 movement found in the Daytona...so that would be my choice. White or black, personal preference.

i feel the Daytona is more versatile ultimately. It is more rugged and less expensive to maintain. The AP, however, has a more hand crafted feel. Ultimately, ill end up with both. The AP will fill the role of the Nautilus in my collection since the Nautilus is just out of reach for me

Exactly why I moved along my two AP watches. Loved them, especially the 15202 Jumbo but after one bad scratch on that bezel my OCD went into high gear. I have a bunch of scratches on my 116500 but it hardly bothers me.

Quick question for the group. I apologize if everyone knows this except for me. On the AP Chrono, for the 30 minute sub dial, has anyone else noticed that it slowly creeps forward like a slow sweep hand, as opposed to waiting to the last minute and jumping to the next minute? I saw this on an Offshore watch recently and I’m trying to figure out if that is standard design. It seems very smooth and purposeful, slowly moving forward throughout the minute it is timing. Thank you for the help
