Is it fair, no, is it within their stated terms...yes.

I was supposed to fly from LAX to JFK several years ago on Jet Blue. If I remember correctly, the fare was about $400. Meeting got cancelled so I had to cancel the flight about a week out, and ended up with just $100 credit towards a future flight.

That stinks but I wouldn't call it deceptive. More like expected knowing airline pricing unfortunately.

I guess it just boils down to the same conclusion as with many areas of life in that there always people who lose out but the current rule is the "least imperfect".
Why does it cost more to carry a passenger one-way? It doesn't. The one-way fare is artificially inflated. If they charged one-way flights at the same rate per mile as round trips no one would consider gaming their system to avoid getting bilked on a one-way.

It's an inherently dishonest business philosophy IMO. Would you do business with anyone else that managed their refund policy this way?

I always assumed this no different to selling multipacks of products cheaper (per unit) than individual units. Passing on the saving from not having to find another customer. I don't know what the expenses/margins are with air travel though. You could have a point.
