I absolutely adore my Explorer. I'll post a couple pics later (dang work computer), but to me it really is the perfect all around watch. I've been wearing it daily for 8 months and I still smile every time I look down at my wrist.

The lume on the new Explorer is perfect!!! It's a great watch and nothing sleepy about it.

It does have a better bracelet than the OP, but other than that and saying explorer on the dial I am at a loss.

A 39mm steel watch on a bracelet is probably one of the most comfortable and wearable in my opinion. The only option I'd love to see on more modern Rolex-es is the glidelock. The Explorer 1 is a very satisfying watch to wear and I find myself appreciating it more than many of my more expensive pieces. It's very much under the radar and inexpensive but still feels like a very high quality watch, which of course it is.

Reliable, durable and discreet. The 214270, short hands, solid bracelet and clasp, WG numerals is my daily watch, go to, any time.

It was my third Rolex; if it was my first, it might have been my only.

In MHO time has passed it. It was a solid, salable watch when introduced. Back then there were no "bragging rights". Witness the original Milgaus. Time and the ever changing market place has evolved. Today a watch needs "bragging rights". One or more characteristics that will enable owners and wannabes to salivate. Back in the '90s, in Japan a very popular male singer, personality was observed wearing an Explorer. Instantly ADs, in Japan, were sold out and wait times were impossible. The quality, durability, dependability had nothing to do with this phenomena. But a pop idol wearing it was.

Lumed 3/6/9 and second hand, Mercedes hour hand, and oyster clasp. Those three things were worth the extra $$ for me.

I would say the Explorer is one of the most under-rated Rolex watches.

Independent watchmaker Roger W Smith wears an Explorer.

I love it and prefer it over the ss sub. It is less popular I guess, but "sleeper"? No.

You forgot the most significant "no" . . . no date. That's enough to keep it from many considering it be a sleeper or future classic.
