probably was not insured as if it was the insurance company would be the ones receiving it not the previous owner. That was my point in not wasting any time trying to recover a stolen watch that is insured as its not your watch any more, it belongs to the insurance company. OP said he has insurance.

maybe. On my safe at least, I'm not even sure how they would do that as everything is inside the safe and it appears to be pretty far inside.

For anyone interested the best safes are floor safes that can be hidden under a section of carpet with rug atop. Simply because only you should know about it.
I need to get a big motherfather of a safe when I return to the UK and was thinking of a floor safe. However, don't they compromise the damp course once you go into the floor?

Depends on the floor I guess. I have floorboards with a few feet of space underneath. The safe I was looking at has spikes coming out in all directions for setting into concrete. Since I'd secretly install it myself I was thinking of cutting a hole in the floor, boxing the area off with maybe a square brick wall, dropping the sucker down there with brick support underneath so it's level with the floor then mixing and pouring my own concrete + rubble around it.

For a solid concrete floor you could probably tank the recess all-round to join the existing DPC before pouring new concrete into the void around the in situ safe, but speak to a building surveyor?

Wow. I always thought it was just Internet lore.

As for safes, I bolt mine to the floor. Sure, a good safe man/thief can saw off the door or bust it open (somehow) but my understanding of the typical residential thief is that they want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Something that may take 10 or 15 minutes to get into, with no guarantee of valuables inside, is probably just going to get skipped.

I also hide the safe, so the combination (ha!) of it being difficult to find along with difficult to get into (or too difficult to take with them) and of course, insurance, allows me to not have to worry about these things.

And I have nosy, retired neighbors. Hopefully they'd notice a break-in, alarm, etc.

Im sorry to hear OP. I would be nauseous if my safe was stolen. Mine is nestled between 3 walls which all have 1/8" plate steel mounted behind the sheet rock, six 1/2" bolts through a 2x8 tongue and groove sub floor and has hidden hinges on the door. If someone truly wants to get in, they will be there for a long while trying.
