Wonder what the weight difference is between a Gold or platinum case with the same amount of metal as a steel case. Along with that, I wonder what the price difference would be a a "solid" Gold or Platinum case. I'm sure watch companies remove this to cut cost and probably to shave some weight. I think cost is probably the number one reason.

Weight definitely is a reason, a considerable amount of metal is removed from these cases.

I priced a GMT Master the other day. Steel $10600, Gold $42250
I doubt there is even an ounce of gold used in the latter model. If you want prestige you will be punished for it.

The material removed as opposed to steel cases is significant, I'd imagine this to add quite a bit of weight making it uncomfortable and top heavy on the wrist.

Depth ratings are:

GMT, Daytona, DD40 100 meters / 330 feet

Sub 300 meters / 1000 feet

Would make sense that the gold subs either are not hollowed out at all or not as much as there brothers that dont have as good of a depth rating?

They are hollowed out just as much. However, the cases are by no means thin and 30bar is not that extreme at all. As long as it's still a nice and solid case with a thick caseback (which it both has) it is fine.

I would like to add that having owned a six digit gold sub for two years now,it is by far the best balanced watch I have ever owned.Yes I have had other watches that weighed the same but these have been head heavy.No doubt the solid bracelet and thinned case on the sub helps achieve this.

It has everything to do with cost. My PM GMT weighs 219g. The Platona comes in at 280g. So I know they could have went up to at least 280g with my watch. For me I had no idea they hollowed them out until I seen this thread. It makes sense from a manufacturers stand point to save more money. But I dont care for it at all.
