I personally would not touch the besel, although the one shown in the pictures is beautifully done. Now matter how scratched it is I wouldn't restore it.

Why would you not touch the bezel?

I guess it is a personal thing - I like to see that the watch lived ;) I have a 16570 but, the besel has been polished out to the point that some of the etched numbers lost their inscription depth near the edges. I will fill the numbers with paint to see if I can restore them. If I don't like the result I will order a replacement besel. Here are some pics so you can judge yourself.

Best,
N

That's because it's polished the wrong way. With this new machinery you can refinish the dial in a way without damaging the inlay. Like in the pictures.

I am sure there is!
Please keep the pictures of the restoration process coming, looking forward for more and the end-result.

Cheers,

Explorer II overhaul- Part 1

Great Bas! Noticed it is a 3186 movement. Those are supposed to be better than older 3185, wonder your opinion on that matter.

They are? I thought there were some well-documented issues with the 3186.

Cheers guys.

The 3186 has parachrom and a different Gmt wheel/spring, just a solid movement.

There is no part two. If any mod is reading this, please remove the part 1 bit from the title...

Love such threads! Fantastic work!

In your opinion for these approx.10 years was the movement serviced and watch polished?

It was unpolished and I could not see any marks inside the movement (scratches, marks on screwheads, etc). Nor was the GMT wheel modification done. So I replaced the spring for the updated one.
