My wrist is about 6.5”, and I think the 36 will be fine for me. On the other hand, my old DJ sometimes seems a bit small, and I once owned a Daytona that seemed like a good fit. So, I’m open to a range of sizes.

My budget will be in the $25-30k range, and that looks pretty appropriate for finding what I want in a 36mm platinum. As I look at the market, I see examples ranging from 10-16 years old. My question is how much difference a few years will make? Is 6 years newer worth another $6K if they are the same model number? Am I not thinking about some sort of high service costs that would be right around the corner? Also, I can’t help but notice that I could get a brand new WG 40mm DD in the same price range from Takuya, and it makes me wonder if I’m being a bit foolish to focus on that ice blue dial.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Try both 36 and 40 on if you haven’t already. Lots to really like about the 40, but the 36 sings to me more.

Best of luck in your search!

Just noticed that your wrist is 6.5”. Sounds like that’s another reason to go with a 36mm case. Try them both on and see how they feel. I have a 7.25 wrist and the 36 is a perfect size for me.

Two years ago I would have said PT 36. I must admit that my tastes have changed and after wearing a GMTIIC as my beater for well over a year, and not really thinking too much about my other watches, I realized that I am having trouble wearing my DJ or DD. DDII, for me has a better size and feel. don't get me wrong PT feels great, and 36 is always a classic, but it feels oddly small and dare I say, my wrist feels, somewhat naked.

I've been thinking about buying a DD for 36, 40 ... quite clearly 40 - it's a little bigger and timeless, so you should look a little bit into the future for so much money, unless you have no clock yet greater than 36 in your collection.
These are only my 2 cents.

I've got a 6.5 inch wrist and here is my DD40.

I think its the perfect size and the new movement and ceramic inserts in the bracelet means you dont have to worry about stretch. I tried on the 36 before buying this and in all honesty it felt way too small on me.

Actually 36 is more timeless. 40 is newer in DD.

Seems like an odd comparison. Like saying should I have pizza or hamburger for lunch. Depends on a lot of personal preferences. New vs old, big vs small, different metals, etc. My preference would be a recent model platinum 36.

thanks for the input everyone. It is greatly appreciated. I live in a relatively small area where none of these choices are available to directly assess—in fact, I’ve never actually seen a platinum DD nor a white gold outside of pictures. I do think it might simply come down to visiting an AD with a large enough selection to try them out. It seems to me that the net sentiment here is that I really can’t go wrong! For what it’s worth, the plan is to acquire a couple nice pieces that will ultimately pass along to my boys, much like I have my Dad’s DJ now, so your comments about considering the long term are well taken.

With all that said, go with whichever one you love the most. You'll never regret it.
Great answer!

This looks so good!

Platinum. I went once with Platinum and i think my next piece will also be Platinum. It just feels so right, the way it shines... and the heft... so rewarding to wear and own

Platinum 36 mm (118206) is better-proportioned and less blingy with the domed bezel. Weighs a ton, though. Stealth.
