Long time friendships or a job.......NO. But just this week while flying back from Houston I sat next to a guy that was wearing a TT Sub. I said to him, Nice watch and he just grinned, than I lifted up my sleve and showed him my SD. I couldn't shut him up for 3.5 hours.....LOL. Anyway it's just like my Harleys, meet another with the same toy.......
I feel a Rolex is more of an ice breaker than a deal closer. Be Safe All JIM |

Hopefully the presence of a Rolex shows an appreciation of quality. Unfortunately there's no ownership application. Any idiot with expendable income can have one.

Any woman who is attracted to you merely because of your Rolex is looking to part you of it as well as your money, and her faux admiration of you is not due to your taste but simply your Money! Attached is a pic of a proud Rolex owner, ever notice Patek owners do not have this problem: |

It's just a watch, albeit a nice one.

Cool your jets, booster. The guy's just asking a question and there's no need to get hot under the collar.

No need to be insulting. It is a conversation.

I agree that wearing a Rolex can be a nice way to get others to talk about their watches. It is a nice way to open a conversation with strangers, colleagues, etc. But, the watch certainly doesn't say anything about the wearer's values, just as I'm sure that some Ferrari owners are great, and others can be jerks.

Rappers, Drug Kingpins, Mobsters, Pimps, and other social undesirables see a Rolex as a status symbol, so they buy them up. But you never hear a rap song about a Patek, Vacheron, or Audemars, just not seen as status symbols like a Rolex... but I believe that Panerai will be the next big thing.

A WIS would go: "Watch... girl... watch... girl...watch... girl... WATCH!". It's all about priorities, m'lad.

so patek is not a status symbol, get out of here. if you have a problem with rolex being liked among 'social undesireables' (spelled wrong idiot), or more brashly put, black people, because thats what you really mean...than why the hell are you on this forum? of course rolex is a status symbol, as with audemars patek, lecoultre, vacheron, omega and the rest of them. anyone who says they buy a rolex because they just love the way it looks is lost, and in denial. buy a good fake then. its the same with woman and their expensive handbags, it makes you feel good to have nice things. and things are nice because society tells you they are. why do you think company's bother to advertise? |

Back to the topic, it's never happened to me, and rightly so. The nature of my work is such that who I am and what I know is much more important than what I wear, and I'd be worried if my choice of watch drove any important decisions.
On the other hand, in line with some of the sentiments here, I do take pleasure out of striking up acquaintances on account of common interests such as watches.

Arizona, the mod team will absolutely not tolerate bigotry here. One more peep out of you on that topic and it's points, followed by banning. You're on thin ice so watch your step. I won't be telling you so nicely next time.

No bigotry here, Gedanken. I have a retail establishment everyone can come in buy, sell, and browse. I never made any racially biased comments, my apologies if they were interpreted that way. I guess I just chimed in on a thread where people are overly sensitive and feel a need for social acceptance by and through the watch they choose to wear. I wear a Rolex because it is a tough durable watch always has been and always will be! |

Very well, lest I be accused of being anything less than accommodating of the membership's sentiments, here's the deal. The next time you make a comment about music of any way shape or form, you get six points.

I think the original question was about connections. I have never had my Rolex randomly open the door for a connection as of yet (only had it since September), but I can see how it could happen.
I will say that since owning my Rolex I have "connected" with four other TRF members here in our area and we had a GTC about 6 weeks ago. Just great people all around and it is my privilege to know them. So, if this is what you mean, then yes. My YM has opened the door to knowing some great people that I never would have met otherwise.

Lol I think some people got out of the wrong side of bed this morning! The Rolex on my wrist has never got me anything, but it just makes me feel as if it has!

About 17 years ago, I struck up a conversation with a guy outside the hangar at my hometown airport. It wasn't about Rolex, it may have been about planes, the weather or even the t-shirt I was wearing. Regardless of the subject (it's so long ago that I don't remember), that guy is and has been the best friend I've ever had.
As a matter of fact, he stood up with me in October at my wedding as my best man and had the pleasure of presenting me with a GMT-II Pepsi before the ceremony. The watch was my wife's wedding gift to me and she had him in on the surprise. He also has the honor of wearing it first since he was wearing it, unbeknownst to me, as we arrived at the church. I think the original question could have been worded better, i.e., Where have conversations about the Rolex you're wearing led you? What stories do you have for us? I certainly don't think that this post should have been hijacked, nor should there have been any mud slung at the guy who started this thread. So far, it seems that only one guy had a story to tell about his Rolex, the guy who got a date. What happened to the mild-mannered congeniality that used to exist on this forum?

Yeah. OK. You got me. I loose my temper over the ramblings of forum denizens on a regular basis......... I still think it was a dumb post. |
