I've never been asked by strangers. When I've looked at getting a new watch, and coworkers see me looking, they sometimes ask out of curiosity. Since I've found that when I tell them the truth they are generally flabbergasted, I've stopped telling them. I made the mistake a few years ago of telling a coworker how much I paid for a pair of Shell Cordovan shoes, and for the next several months he made sure to loudly tell several other co-workers something like "Can you believe how much this guy spent on some shoes?" I've tried to be more discreet with high dollar purchases since then.

Thankfully I've never been asked but if I was I think my answer would just be "a few quid" and leave it at that.

Of course another, albeit more complicated, answer is:

"It is not the initial cost, as many Rolex timepieces tend to gain in value, though in reality a Rolex cost and resale price keeps up with currency devaluation."

A bit snarky of an answer, sure, yet also tests their knowledge in currencies and 'buying power' over time. Currency devaluation is another term for inflation of course.

I've been asked if my watches were real more times than I can count. I actually stopped wearing any of my nice watches for a long time because I got so frustrated about people asking the question.

I've never been asked how much they were (other than by another watch enthusiast), but, if I were to be asked, I'd probably say something to deflect like, "I got a great deal on it," or something like that.

I don't get asked about my watches much, but I have had these two questions asked of me several times by pretty much anyone who doesn't own a Rolex themselves. Not sure why it bothers me so much. I just sometimes get the impression the only thing most of the public knows about Rolex is that they are expensive. Obviously when I bump into someone else wearing a Rolex the conversation is completely different and much more enjoyable.

Maybe I need to remember that before I got into this hobby I probably didn't know much more about Rolex than some of these folks do...

In 7 years I've had 2 strangers say "Nice watch." I've never had anyone, including friends, family, coworkers ask about cost.

I was asked by three of my very very close friends and it didn’t phase me. If it was just an acquaintance or rando I would probably say check the website.

I was asked at a business lunch while sitting in a large group of colleges. The person next to me was into watches and simple asked to see my new piece (DaytonaC). He and I have been talking watches before - but his timing at this lunch was very bad. I couldn’t awoid or stop the multiple follow up questions from the rest of the group and it became very awkward. The rest of the group had no understanding of prices and Rolex. Price, quality, income, functions etc. - the questions came without ending. I found it difficult to discuss and argue with a person who compared with his no name quartz watch. I ended up telling that I bought the watch to celebrate the birth of my son... I think that made some sense. I didn’t answer the pricepoint question...

Normally I don’t care and simply enjoy the watch which I’ve bought from my own money. The episode hasn’t stopped my. I love my watch and the fact that I’ve worked for it! I still wear it as my every day watch.
