Changing your watch in this scenario is indeed weird. It exposes you to taking your watch off the safest place and compromising it and yourself in the situation.

Just put some distance between you and the gawker.

Maybe it was one of those newer larger Fitbit type wrist monitors and he was going to count his steps, monitor pulse, or something of the thought while on the way home.

Maybe he saw you staring at it and thought it was best to take it off so he didn’t risk someone trying to snatch it?

That was YOU BT?! All I knew was some weird guy sitting across from me kept looking at my DJ, so I took it off. By the way, you really should wear pants on a train.

He was probably using the sports watch to track his steps on the way home or something

In case you didn't read, it is an affluent area. That would never happen. I mean, criminals don't go to affluent areas to rob and steal from the rich.

Maybe he saw some dude staring at his wrist in a creepy way and he thought he should take the watch off and hide it.

This is the most logical explanation (if anyone needs one) I’ve heard.

His girlfriend gave him the Rolex and he was heading home to his wife.

Doubt he switched watches because you were staring, because you’d already seen it. What would be the point.

Perhaps some people wear a Rolex to work as a status thing.

Wife takes her Rolex off when on her train commute. On occasion while going into a rural dive bar I've slid mine into a pocket.

Maybe he switched his as you were ogling it. Do you look like a heist man?

I’d look up and would see him staring at my watch. I became nervous and tried to cover my watch with my sleeve, but I could still see him trying to catch a glimpse of my watch. About 15 mins. into the ride, I discreetly took off my Rolex and put on a Swiss Army watch I had in my gym bag. I got off a couple stops later and was relieved when the guy didn’t follow me off the train.
You nailed it!

I think it's because he wasn't comfortable wearing it, obviously you were having a field day looking at his wrist i would be uncomfortable too...Just saying
