You can afford a summer house but you’re worried about your expensive watch getting scratched?

Life is far too short... we just unexpectedly lost my mother last month ...she put so many things off... including not using things or waiting until the right time to wear something. Now it’s too late. To me the time is now! Enjoy it because you never know when your time is up. Who cares what others think and understand. None of that matters, really. I’m not one to tell others what to do, but, I try to learn from my own experiences.

Why have a summer house if it can burn down?
Why drive a car if it can be scratched or totaled?
Why buy nice clothes if you can catch fabric on something and tear it?

I just don't understand irrational fears that some criminal is always stalking your Rolex and catastrophic damage is just around the corner during otherwise normal activities.

No.

I am selling watches I do not wear. It makes me sad to see them unloved.

There is NO POINT in owning something you do not use

Sell them, move on and be happy.

Whether you bought an SKX, Black Bay, Daytona or President, if you’re afraid to wear the watch doing just about anything, you spent too much money on it.

Very sorry to hear that, but that is very valuable advice.

Get insurance and pretend you're wearing a cheap Timex.

I have a Daytona and have always worn to the beach, playing with the kids, swimming in the ocean. In fact as I put it on this morning I was looking down at the swirls on the bracelet thinking the sand and my vacation last year likely created them. I used to “save” my Rolex and did not wear them until I had 2. Then I realized that they were built for the elements, and meant to be enjoyed.

I get it, especially in early days of ownership! In the end though they are just a watch...a very expensive watch but just a watch. It is certainly valuable enough to insure and if it is insured it can be lost, stolen or damaged and still be replaced.

If wearing it takes away any joy of life then let them go and wear watch that won't.

Wearing expensive watches...

Put a rubber strap on the Daytona and wear it to the beach, it’ll be fine. And I only say put the rubber on because of the PCLs on the bracelet.

Own your watch and enjoy it, don’t let it be the other way around.

Has the watch got sentimental value?

If not, insure it for maybe 2% a year and thats the price of enjoyment. If its not worth that 2% a year then maybe its time for an extra watch in the line up. Something happens to it, get a new one.

There is no shame in treating your watch like something special but that does take away from its possible enjoyment.

I got my first Rolex because I never had to worry about it I strap it on and get going with life without worry.
Beach, jet skis, boats, mowing the lawn, washing the car, etc etc etc.
Is it scratched up? Yeah. But, it’s mine and it looks great to me

How do you manage to step outside without being overly worried? Take a deep breath, relax, put that watch on your wrist and take a sip of your drinks

I’m not in the “just a watch” camp. I’m careful with my watches, but not neurotic. They have some small scratches, but nothing I obsess about. If I feel like I’m entering a situation or activity that may damage it, I wear a something else. You have to find a balance that works for you. It’s better than worrying and taking away from your life’s experiences. If it causes you anxiety, it’s not worth owning.

If you buy an expensive watch for $12,000 and wear it every day for 30 years it will cost you about $1 daily..........enjoy your expensive watch and remember, if you can handle $1 daily, after 30 years the watch is free :)

Best part is you can sell your watch after 30 years and make money :)

I agree, although, to be fair, we have no idea if today’s children will be interested in paying big money for old watches in 30 years. You wanna buy my grandfather’s pocket watch he left me? It’s still running -2 seconds.

I don't get it. I mentioned in this thread already that I have other watches to wear when I do certain things.

People on here are saying that I (not directly to me) should not own my Rolex BLNR or SUB because I don't want to wear them constantly? It give me great pleasure when I do wear them. I don't stress over wearing them.

I don't think that I should not own a few great watches because there are times when it does not make sense to me to be wearing one. I just came back from a long bicycle ride. I wore my $100 Swiss Army watch.

To each their own I guess.

If scratches and dings bother you then I would just enjoy the Daytona where you feel comfortable wearing it and keep a second watch for beach etc. We are all different people.

Lots of people's advice is to insure it.
Before I start a new thread I'll ask here: with whom do you guys insure your timepiece actually?

As others have said, wear it any enjoy it.

Nothing is going to happen to a Daytona at the beach. If you need to leave it at the house, just put it some place safe. I doubt a potential thief would look in every random spot. I personally do not wear my nice watches during any physical activity. Not because I'm afraid of damage, but because I consider them a hindrance. Although I was at the beach this weekend with a speedmaster.... Blasphemy I know. They supposedly explode if you take them near water.

I hope this next part doesn't sound too rude, but if you can't afford to lose something, it just means that you can't really afford it. I understand these are expensive things, but that is all they are. Things. Things that can be replaced.

Get insurance for peace of mind.

I have my father's and my watches covered with a policy from Jeweler's Mutual. I think I pay around $600 for 40k-45K total value with a zero deductible. $600 is nothing for peace of mind if you need it. Even though I personally don't think I would ever need because I've never damaged, misplaced, or had a watch stolen.

Here's how you stop worrying about a 12k daytona. Think of the people put their (overpriced) 50k 5711's in the water every day :D

PS: A daytona will handle the beach JUST FINE!

What’s not got to get? Rolex professional models were designed to be worn in adverse conditions and last a lifetime. If a guy bought a $250 Stilleto hammer, but still used his $20 hammer, because he was afraid to damage the Stilleto, I’d also find that a little unusual, but, as you say, to each their own.

That’s really the crux of this. Some of us see these watches as durable, well made tools that happen to cost a lot, and others see them as jewelry that make an impression.

Saturday I cleaned out my garden shed a task which took several hours, a lot of lifting and moving junk around. It was hot so I did it in a short sleeved shirt wearing my Daytona. No scratches and no pampering. I can't really think of any time I've ever removed a watch to do a task. Maybe in the old days when I went swimming with watches that weren't able. Wear your watches and enjoy them!!!

Exactly. These watches always appealed to me because I wouldn’t need to worry about taking them off.

I think the ever increasing value of these watches is stunting people’s usage, and they’re more worried about value than the point of the watch in the first place. I’d honestly love it if the values fell to zero.

WHOA.

There is a $250 HAMMER!?

Forget the rest.
