My thoughts exactly.
I justified my Rolex GMT in 1984 after selling a Harley for a $1,000 profit. Had about $140 left over, as I recall.

No doubt, it sounds like you've got it together. I wouldn't think too hard about it. Enjoy it now, you really can't lose. Btw> I'm in sales, business owner and a little further down the road, kids grown, home and 4 cars paid for..half of my last two bonuses were spent on Rolex's, l look at horology as an invested hobby, it's enjoyable and liquid. Hope you get your your Sub soon and post an Incoming, it's a wise choice and yes we are enablers here. See. ]

There are worse thing to spend money on. Helps that if you have the opportunity to buy from an AD at list, you won't lose much if anything on the secondary market.

The way I see it, you need to reward yourself for accomplishments at work. That's how I justified my M3 and my watches. Lol.

I subscribe to the “spend money on things you value, cut spending mercilessly on everything else” approach. I also make sure I’m maxing out my retirement funds and otherwise automate my finances. I’d say go for it.

To answer your original question "When can I justify it" the answer is very simple. When your wife agrees with your reason for buying it. Of course it might help if you include one for her as well. Nothing like a mutual reward to solidify the decision and share the guilt.

Well, it's nearly 20 years later, and I somehow survived. And bought a few other nice watches along the way. And enjoyed every minute of this crazy addiction...uh, I mean hobby.

Point is, if it's what you want, then you'll figure out a way to make it work. Sounds like you're a very hardworking and thoughtful person, and...the wife's on board. All systems are GO.

Without even knowing your finances, I would say go for it. Good luck.
Words of wisdom right here. Was thinking along similar lines. Things have a way of working out well sometimes even more than we expect them to.

If you can afford an M3, and more importantly, a place to park it here in Hawaii, you can probably afford a Rolex.

Unless you living same house as your parents, brother, aunties, cousins, tutu, gung gung, and po po.

Beware that successfully justifying one generally leads to justifying more. I went from one Rolex to 5 between my wife and I, and now serious consideration of PM.

It’s not the sub you have to worry about. It’s the ‘now I need it in green and the BLNR too’ that you should be concerned with.

I waited until the family had what was needed, house, education and then looked at treating my wife and myself with the extras.

Just buy it and enjoy it. Like others mentioned here, your Sub will retain most of its value in the future.

I don’t mean this in an ignorant way but life is for living

Do what you love then get what you love.

All possessions are pretty meaningless, but can make life interesting at times.

As I got older (I also use to saved excessively for my and my kids future)... then I realised, no matter what I do I will always make ends meet.

I also realised that no amount of money I save for my kids will make them better people. They also won’t remember my money when I’m gone. In fact I never discuss money with them and teach them it’s not important in life.

The best I can do for them is put them in situations that are different, push them to explore and learn and make sure they get a good education. Then, they will make their own way.

In the meantime, get your watch, you work hard for you too

You sound sensible and seem to have your head on straight. Go for it. It's not like you're buying something that's going to keep draining your money.

But as others have said, once you realize much you were overthinking it, the next ones become much easier. Beware

A good friend of mine convinced me to buy my first Rolex. He said this, "You make good money, your finances are in order, your only debt is your house and your cars. A Rolex is an investment you can enjoy." He then showed me his 18 year old Sub he bought for $2,000 and invested $800 in to service twice. He said the watch was now worth at least $5,000. He was low on his estimate, but the point was made. A Sub is a much safer play than a car. I had a 911 at the time. I thought about the maintenance costs of the car versus the maintenance costs on a watch. And, if you look at the prices now, Rolexes are not getting any cheaper. Treat yourself. You deserve it. The purchase will not lose much, if anything, in terms of value. Most of the time, the Sub will go up in value.

If y’all are banking 60% of your after-tax income, then yes, you can afford to buy a $10k Rolex without feeling hesitation or guilt. Using conservative, round numbers....if you were making $100k per year after taxes, that means you’re socking away $60k, or $5k per month. Two months worth of savings is nothing in the grand scheme of things. The real risk that I see - and others have alluded to it - is that you get addicted to the high of making a new acquisition, and don’t stop with the Sub.

My advice is, buy the watch, wear the hell out of it, and stay off this Forum. Seriously.

Don't ask us ... this is a decision for you to make and live with.

One I think I will say is that with Rolex, unlike many other brands, if you purchase certain SS sports (GMT, Sub, Daytona) for MSRP or close, you will not really lose anything in the future. So, even if things went sideways with your current job, you can count on that watch as cash if needed.

If you were to go out and purchase a Panerai, IWC, JL, and many others, you would be losing $$ immediately ... like with the M3.
