Overall looking at different factors I say yes I think Rolex is the best and I will tell you why. One it is a well made high end watch. Two it is affordable to anyone who makes a decent income and/or has good credit. You can spend as little as $5000 or close to or even over a $100,000 to get a brand new Rolex. Even the average person can afford to spend around $9000 (especially if they are paying it off on credit) and get a nice Rolex. The brand is well known and a symbol of success all around the world. It has excellent resale value compared to many other watches. Plus there is a Rolex culture that supports and loves the brand as this forum proves with it's many members, threads and posts. So long live Rolex the best wristwatch in the world.

They make the best everyday tool watches and most reliable, but there are brands that are far better with regards to haute horology and hand finishing

This is how I feel. That said, I think there are a number of qualities of the watches that have already been mentioned that do put Rolex in the upper echelon. A broad, diverse range of offerings (unlike an AP for example that relies on basically one watch). Durability, aesthetics and price. On that last point, it goes back to branding, but what I mean is that while any new Rolex is priced well out of the range of what most would pay, it is an attainable luxury unlike perhaps some of the other brands that some may consider "better".

I voted 'yes.' I can remember who wore a Rolex back from when I was a kid! (eg. my neighbor's dad, he was a doctor.) I remember the Reinhold Messner ads in National Geographic (well they seemed to always have a Rolex on the back cover LOL!) It must be some kind of emotional tie.

It's pretty easy to argue they are indeed #1:
- Most popular luxury brand. Where I live, not a day goes by that I don't see someone with a Rolex.
- Accessible by a huge segment of population due to price (5k-50k)
- Very visible, worn by countless celebrities & athletes
- Solid quality control & customer support
- Very good value retention

Is that all due to branding? Much of it is but Rolex still makes a very good product.

On the other hand, you could point to something like a Grand Seiko and say it's a better watch. Yes it is when you consider just the mechanics but I've never seen anyone wearing one. Digital watches beat everything else when it comes to accuracy and durability but I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one!

There is no reason for me to define best. Take what you think is best in a wristwatch and see if rolex does it best for you. That is the only criteria.

For me it is best based on how I define what a best wristwatch means for me.

As far as actual watches ?
Durable ?- yes, but not especially

Accurate ?-yes, but not uniquely

Attractive ? Homely, (and with a hotter sister, Tudor). Basically 3 watches - a diver looking one that's sometimes a GMT, a tiny chronograph and a "Perpetual" one that comes in 1000 dial combinations of no date/date/day date depending how much you're looking to spend.

Horologically ? nope, not close...

Not a simple yes or no question. If you want a watch that is reliable, classy, recognizable, well-made and can be dressed up or down then yes. However, if craftsmanship, detailing, elegance are important than there are others.

What I look for in a watch...yes! Ease of ownership, durability, reliability, history, cost of service/maintaining...cost of entry is a bit high especially now but the best in my book.
