A sub sounds like it would be a great pice for him.

I'd go with something with a date function. If he's a physician, I'd imagine that would come in handy quite often.

I personally would go Rolex over Tudor. Both are extremely generous but a Rolex is a Rolex and I think even a frugal type guy would immensely appreciate the gesture and likely cherish it.

Explorer I or Sub Date. Hopefully your B-I-L appreciates the importance of quality, brand name, tested gear when embarking in all the potentially deadly adventures...

If it must be a Rolex I'd suggest an Explorer 39mm as it's under the radar. A Sub shouts ROLEX quite loudly and may grate if he values pure utility (not saying a Sub isn't also a utility piece, just that it's louder).

216570 or 114060 would be my considerations.

I would probably go Submariner, 6 digit no date reference to keep it close to the $7k budget.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and helpful comments. Some are hilarious indeed. I made the decision of Tudor 58.

Only one sister. If you have a sister, lmk ;) Pelagos is awesome. Decided on 58 due to smaller size otherwise it'll be the Pelagos. Quote:

Will post pics when I receive the Tudor 58. It'll be my b-i-l first Tudor and mine as well.

Well, if he goes diving, there's your answer. Under 10k, a Sub or Sub Date. If there were sports Rolex watches anywhere to be seen at an AD, I would say take him shopping with you and let him choose. Personally, I don't appreciate anyone else picking out clothing or any type of jewelry for me. Are you sure he doesn't feel the same?
I think it might be a good idea, if you can do it subtly, to try and get an idea what his tastes might be in a watch. Just my He will probably appreciate the gesture, but it would not be great if he ended up wearing that watch, or than type of watch, or that expensive a watch, just to please you. Cheers, Carl

First of all great gesture on your part! You are an awesome brother in law!!!
Based on how you describe the guy, my suggestion is try to get him a birth year Sub (or maybe one from a year that has significance to him like the year he was married, kid’s bday, etc; might be easier said than done, I know). The watch will now be a reminder of a milestone for him rather just an unecessary luxury item. Who knows, it might even jumpstart an appreciation for this hobby down the road a well... Explorer 36mm or Explorer 2 42mm with the black dial. Hey, those just happen to be my two watches.
