I'm going to vote yes. The entire wardrobe expectations have changed over the last 50 years. Dramatically, so.
In the Valley (SF) you won't see or be required to wear dress watches at work. You might see them on VC's and lawyers, .etc, but you're more likely to see an Apple Watch out here on the West Coast. Just like you won't see suits except in certain professions. Now, NYC? I'd say there's still a formal dress code in financial professions and a lot of those positions, at least among people that would actually wear dress watches, so you might see a lot more of it over there. You really only have to look at dress codes to see where dress watches fit in. There just aren't as many mandatory formal dress code requirements anymore. All there is to it. The watch was built for a purpose that doesn't really exist on the aggregate in todays age. Now, that doesn't mean you can't dress down a dress watch. It isn't a suit. An ALS or PP will go with anything. And, if anything, the Rolex would stand out far more than either of those models. Price could certainly be a factor as well. As the demand for dress watches decrease the models still in production are likely to move up the chain towards PM's and lower allocations (exclusivity) which works for everyone. For the record. I like dress watches. I would wear one with jeans and a t-shirt, I don't care. I simply wanted to point out since formal dress is rarely required, the dress watch is a dinosaur in the watch game. |

[QUOTE=sambb;9867391]I read recently that dress watches are dead, that work is more casual, and people want a watch that can be worn dress or casual. Hence, smart watches, etc.
Suggest you not trust everything you read. |

Not dead - just not as hyped and popular today. I wear vintage dress watches with jeans to work fairly regularly.
A few examples: |

Not to me. Great deals to be had.
Honestly I consider a dress watch time only precious metal on strap 34-39mm. Just because it’s on leather doesn’t make it a dress watch.

Where does that leave people who can’t afford something like that? What do you then call their watches that look like your idea of a dress watch, but isn’t one? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This is another watch topic displaying the polarizing differences between the WIS community and the general public.
The overall market is showing a clear preference to brands and their subsequent "sport" references that allow for "Beach to Boardroom" flexibility. They will more that likely own only (1) watch and that watch needs to be able to go anywhere...hence the extraordinary popularity of Rolex Sports and DJ references among the GP. They are built to be used for activities and posh enough to wear in a dressier situation. The WIS will more than likely own multiple watches in their collection, so they will see the "need" for a dress watch, so they will own one. In their eyes the dress watch is totally needed and the segment is not "dead". |

Lange, Patek and JLC to name a few would have something to say about that. I agree like many I would wear Sub or 58 in any scenario, but I don’t think they are dead. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Dress watch or sport? How about just beautiful? I can have this one peeking out from the cuff or with a pullover and jeans...If I fall into the East River, it's waterproof, too...
Sport watches - indeed. But as a classification, a category. With but a few exceptions when's the last time any of the Submariners owned here saw the sea, or the Daytonas the track? Just my .02. Ben |

Beautiful Jaeger Lecoultre Reverso. Today we would regard the Reverso as a dress watch but it was invented for Polo players. Most probably would know that this watch is designed so that the watch could be flipped with crystal in and case back out to save the watch face and dial from damage. Technically, Reverso is a classic sport watch. |

I actually am thinking of getting a Rolex Cellini Prince. I know it went out of production a few years ago but these watches are still available. https://www.revolution.watch/the-cur...rolex/?archive |

IMO the under 10k dress watches are struggling against rolex.
they thought (which i believe is actually true) that rolex is very recognizable and could be an investment, and a good looking watch. |
