Got 3998P and 5711 blue and might add a chrono and PC. Expressed my interest in 5968 and 5740 to this end, but unfort only early this year, not right after Basel 2018... Not impossible but it'll be a few years.

The definition of need and want are quite different. Watch collecting is all about wanting not needing. There is no correct answer to wanting, its largely determined by one's keen interest and finances. In today's world nobody needs a watch for the purpose of telling the time or date which is readily available everywhere.

How many watches do you need in your collection

The number is N plus 1 where N is the number you already have.

In some cases S minus 1 may apply where S is the number that will cause separation from your significant other.

For me, two. My SS 36mm DateJust, and my SS Submariner. I have a Seiko SRP773 that I got a great deal on. I wear it maybe, every other week.

Two. Sub and Aquanaut. Yeah, just two, at least until the next heartstopper comes along....

For the win. Tried to quote whoever said N+1. Where N is number of current watches held.

Need about 11. Here is the breakdown:
Patek - 3 Nautilus, 1 Aquanaut, 1 AC, 1 PC, 1 PCC
Rolex - 1 Daytona
AP - 1 RO/ROC
Grand Seiko - 2

Ideally should add 1 or 2 bonbon but really can't afford them.....

I like the smaller RO/ROC - those 37/38mm fit my childlike wrist.

That's very hard. I'm a major fan of the Nautilus and the bonbon shall only be added after I add the Ferrari and Bentley, which is like, never.

Well I have five and will buy another one next year. So six is a good number.

However, at times I believe three would be perfect. A platinum VC Historiques American 1921, a VC WG Overseas ultra-thin, and a 5119J Calatrava.

my ideal number would be 5-7... but if we count it, it is def more than that...(my ideal collection is to get one that you will never let go)

currently i have two FPJ - one elegante, one Octa limited edition (will prob give the elegante to the wife and will never sell the octa) and one omega speedmaster..(will prob give to the kid - so that's maybe another 10-15 years time); also have seiko and casio as my weekend/diver/play watch.

looking to add:
1. two nautilus (5712A and 5711R), one nice calatrava as dress watch, one AC, one PC and one world timer - so this is six already...
2. two more fpj (a resonance/optimum and a CB) - two
3. one or two Rolex (a YG and a RG)- two
4. one AP royal oak - one

so that's a total of 11.

= =....seems like the list will continue as time goes by....

I’ve technically got 5, but really only 3 in the rotation. I could live with 4 of the 5 that I have and be content.

I am very happy with the three in my rotation and haven’t really been looking at others for purchase since I rounded it out. I’ve got one on rubber (AP Diver), one on leather (PP 5524g) and one on bracelet (Rolex DSSD). I feel like I have all my bases covered and not much overlap which makes deciding which watch to wear pretty easy.

How many watches do you need in your collection?

I would go with brother Jorge aka JorgeCCW old theory....

1) Dressy complicated
2) Power Watch
3) Rolex Sport watch
4) humble watch

Unfortunately, I got more watches than I ever need......

Sports, travel time, dress, PC and 1 just because you can

Thoughts?

If talk about "need", one watch is enough.

If talk about "want", then there is no limit.

Sorry what in the world is a humble watch. Lol. First time I’ve heard the term... I’m guessing not the FU watch lol

Honestly, I'd love to be a 1 watch guy, to feel today the way I felt about my 5066 for twenty years. I wish Patek made a 38mm Aquanaut or Nautilus (and that you could buy them for MSRP).

Nobody makes a 38mm dress watch on rubber or bracelet with decent water-resistance any more.

The perfect watch box would include the followings:

Patek: Aquanaut 5164, Nauti 5980, Calatrava 5524
Rolex: SD 4000, Daytona RG on oysterflex

Then you have the sports model (Aqua & Dayto), the sport-chic with the Nauti, the dressy with the Calatrava, the daily/tool with the SD.

So 5 is my final answer

If you buy for collecting there is no limit. If you buy to wear 3 is enough imho.

As many as I want and can afford. I move from around ten to an all time high of 27. Some consolidation pending but it is all fun.
