"Again started doing more research and just loved that this is something I can wear everyday and not be afraid to get it torn up like the submariner."

No offense, but I'm rather puzzled by that! The Explorer is definitely a very tough watch, but tougher than a Sub? IŽd say they're equally tough, but others might disagree! My 14060, bought new in 1996, has been my daily watch ever since, and has taken everything thrown at it, and has never been babied! I have had it serviced twice at the RSC where I live (no polishing, I like the dings and scratches!) Like the Explorer, a Sub is definitely an everyday watch! But let's face it, any watch can be smashed/broken! Do enjoy your Explorer

Congratulations mate! I too, recently bought an Explorer as my very first Rolex. Wear it in good health.

I'd say the modern Explorer is more tool-ish than the modern Sub with the ceramic insert, simply because that insert could shatter if you smash the watch into something, where the bezel of the Explorer would just ding.

The sub has a more beefy crown, more WR and crown guards, which I guess makes up some of the difference. Still though, that shatter prone ceramic insert does make it less tool-ish than the Explorers.

Previous generation subs with alu-inserts were tough as nails.

What I meant to say is that I'd be afraid to wear it day to day as my first watch. Wanted to get the explorer as first watch because I can see myself wearing it daily and getting comfortable with luxury watches before I start purchasing more expensive watches. Sorry if that was confusing!

What I meant to say is that I would be afraid to wear it daily. As for the explorer, I can see myself wearing daily and beating it up as I get comfortable wearing luxury watches so I can get use to it before I buy much more expensive watches. Also I wanted to buy a Sub new and that isn't happening with all the waitlists lol... So I'll be patient for that one!

I think the point being made is that the Submariner isn't a watch to baby and preserve just because it costs a few dollars more than an Explorer. It's a dive watch (or at least a dive-style watch) that has mostly brushed surfaces and a somewhat scratch resistant bezel material. The Explorer, while a very rugged watch originally designed for...you guessed it..exploring, is slighty dressier as it has some polished surfaces, plain bezel and less sporty dial design. If anything, the Explorer will show its scars more than a Submariner.

Just wanted to introduce myself as I'm new to the forums. So I've always dreamed of getting a Rolex and growing up my favorite Rolex was the Submariner. I just turned 25 years old a few weeks ago and decided that I wanted to get myself a nice birthday present. So I started researching one different watches to get and wasn't sure if I was ready to put a lot of money into a luxury timepiece so I started looking into Tudor watches, specifically the Tudor BB58. I was pretty much ready to purchase it but then took a step back and felt that I was just buying a Tudor because they are apart of Rolex because ultimately I wanted a Rolex...

Fast forward to last week, I went to my local AD and was just going to look around and I obviously knew that I would never find a submariner there. So I started looking online and was looking at the pre-owned market. I started watching youtube videos on Rolex watches and came across a video by Bark and Jack - "Best Everyday Rolex - Explorer vs Submariner". I was never a fan of the Explorer partly because I was blinded by the submariner. I started looking into the Explorer 214270 Mk2 and pretty much fell in love with it. Again started doing more research and just loved that this is something I can wear everyday and not be afraid to get it torn up like the submariner.

Today I finally just gave in and purchased a pre-owned Rolex Explorer through DavidSW and should be here Tuesday! I'm excited for where this journey takes me and hope to expand the collection eventually.

This thread will be for My First Rolex - Explorer 1. Will add pictures of where this watch takes me! Sorry if I dragged this along! Cheers!
Welcome to the forum. I, like you, grew up loving the submariner. Got a 5 digits sub date back in 2004 and traded it in for a GMT, then got a sub date ceramic later on and traded it again for a TT datejust. Since then I always wanted another sub until I recently got one from David, a 5 digits, and I am loving it. The new Rolex Sub ceramic date or no date is a beautiful watch but nothing beats the roughness and simple elegance of the classic 5 digits Rolex Sub. You have made your decision and pulled the trigger but should you have asked in the forum before, (don't know if you actually did or not), I would have suggested to go for a preloved 5 digits sub date. One you love a watch you will always love that watch. A 5 digits sub looks always beautiful even when beaten and scratched to death. I'll be more bold (or bolder). I know it might be too late but If I were you now, I would contact David or Chris and would pay the difference and would get his preloved M series 5 digits sub date with papers on his website instead of the explorer. You can see I'm not a fan of the explorer but I have had many Rolex watches and my only one now is a sub date. Once you love a watch you'll always love that watch. Sorry for my boldness. I might just have spoken by experience after expending so much money y different watches when my only favorite is the omnipresent, everyone have one, seen all over the world, Rolex Sub Date.

I really do like the ceramic Sub and that's why I wanted to wait on it till I can find one new at an AD. Also wanted it to keep the simple design and not bring too much attention to myself and the explorer seems to do that the best.

Congrats, great choice! I just added an explorer to my collection and am really enjoying it. I like it on a strap as well as the bracelet.

An outstanding choice. A great watch which doesn't shout and has a massive understated presence.
